longboard - lamination

Just finished shaping out my first, full size board, ‘weighing’ in at 9’1", width of 18 x 22 x 14 - more or less. I’ve never glassed anything this size. Planning on 6 x 4 on the top and 6 on bottom. Can anyone give me a ballpark on how much resin per side. I know it matters on the glasser, but I just don’t want to throw away a bunch of resin. A quart is usually more than enough for me to lam 4 x 4 on the deck of a 6’3 shorty. And a half quart of sanding resin is more than sufficient as well. Thanks

If I were you, I’d say screw the resin and overestimate. It really does suck to see all your resin dripping on the ground, but its a hell of a lot better than realizing that you dont have enough. My friend had just finished his 9’6" and we were glassing it(this was the 7th glass job we had done, and nothing larger than 7’11") and guess what- We didnt make enough resin up, which was really not cool. Id just do a surface area calculation if I were you, then you could compare how much you used on your others to this new one. If you are using thicker glass, keep in mind it will take a little more resin also.

Howzit Rook, Go with UV resin and what you don’t use can go back nto the can. For the bottom I use about 1 quart of resin but I have extra ready just in case. For a 6+4 deck a little over a quart should do it but once again have some extra ready. Not all blanks use the same amount,a more porous blank or a painted blank will alter the amount needed for the lam. For Longboards I like to have a gallon of resin even if I don’t use that much, but when you take in to consideration basting, hotcoats, fin box install and plugs you will come close to using a gal.
