Longboard Perimeter Stringer construction

Ok, I decided to go off the deep end…

How would you (anyone) replace the center

2stringer on a conventional longboard blank with

two perimeter stringers?

My thinking:

  1. Lay out the template and cut the perimeter

stringer outlines in the blank (a la Ambrose)

  1. Shape stringers down to match blank profile

  2. Remove center stringer and replace with a

glue line for reference.

  1. Shape as desired…

Ambrose has a great thread here or on the other

forum SMag, I don’t remember… that details how

he does it on a

shortie and really is the inspiration

on this all so

do a search

if you want to see a pro method. (LOL)

the challenges are, seems to me, to get the two opposite stringers parallel, and to cut the blank smoothly.

The suggested answer is a cutting template; the suggested tool is (of course) a hotwire if EPS, but maybe a wire saw for PU. Wire saw may have another name but basically it’s a wire with grit on it, so that it will cut in any direction at any radius. Would need a good guide for it though.

Procedurally, I’d rough shape the board first, so you can use the center stringer for reference as usual. Then cut the center stringer out using a crosscut or other saw and glue the blank back together using whathaveyou. I’d not use a colored glue-up, but that’s me. Then cut the outer stringer lines, glue in the wood, then resume shaping.

I have an 8’6" with two colored glue-ups, a Clark blank from 2001. The glue-ups would chip out during shaping and little bits got snagged in the sureform, later under the sanding block. It was hell to get a smooth finish on the blank without the chips snagging, dragging and marring the finish, but eventually I got it. I think I used the finger plane last. The board is a medium blue tint, and to this day shows some of the chip/drag lines.

The easiest solution imho would be to use a stringerless blank and then template the outline less 12~16mm, cut the outline and on the square planshape outline lay-up some sheets of balsa/paulownia/other wood and clamp with big bar clamps a-la compsand, shape the rails, glass, smile.

Found the link, great series of photos

showing construction…

Looks like Shaun has lost some weight…

the bike is really intense too.

Hope yu all see what I mean…
