Hi there, I’m looking for a template for a summer time fish that will perform in mushy surf but can still hold when surf jumps up. I’m looking for it to be somewhere from 5’5"-5’3" x 20 x 2 3/8 (or +). I’ve looked for something in this range but couldn’t find any for something this small of a fish.
I have templates from 5-10 to 6-6. I use them to make whatever fish I need, even boards a bit shorter. You’re welcome to any of them although I think you would be better served by finding a friend with a fish in that range and tracing it. Or, you could use a fishing pole to connect the dots and make your own. In my experience fish don’t work vary well in mushy surf. Longboards are better. Fish work well in small snappy hollow surf. Mike

Thanks for the offer on the template, I’ll take a look at it. The surf here really varies sometimes it’s sometimes 2-3 foot that’s just not powerful and sometimes it’s got alot more push to it. I was planning for the fish to have less rocker to account for it work well in smaller surf, nothing above 6 ft.
I can trace a six foot, 5-10, and take one off my 5-8, put it on paper and mail it to you. From those curves you should be able to come up with something. If your interested PM me and address and I’ll get them in the mail. Mike
http://www.geocities.com/rashboyy/retrotwnfsh.htmlI would also just use the Lis template check out the fish Moonie who posts on here made using the lis template I think they are 5’5" you should get ahold of him i believe he lives in Cape May.
LEsider- I am planning on using the Lis template for the majority of my shaping, but I’m looking for what else I can use to influence my shape. I’ll contact the guy you mentioned if I need any help.
chipfish- I’d be greatful for your 5’5" that looks like a true fish right out of the 70’s!
jahklow- Thanks for the template man. But what scale is it to, I’m having trouble with how I’m going to convert these image templates to be an actual 5’5".
First, go to APS3000.com, download free software, no strings, no hassle, quick download, lots of people here use it–learn it, live it, love it–
Then e-mail that PDF to your local Kinko’s or Staples, as an attachment with your instructions to print only the rocker profile and the outline in true 5’5" lengths–go get it check it, pay for it.
YOu could import that PDF into the APS software and trace it right now–will take some time to learn, or maybe MAYBE I can e-mail it to you in APS board file format–lemme look and see if it’s possi–nope, not possible, sorry, PDF to Kinko’s bro
welcome, kid–if you wanted me to shave it down anywhere…I could in about a minute
thanks for all the help, i just downloaded the APS3000 software and seems to work great but I’m still a little confused on how to make everything work and what each point does. How would I import the PDF document into APS? On the open it shows only board files.
Also, since I’m new to getting this down can you make the template a…5’3" or 5’4", also the rocker like a round nose fish so it will work well in smaller surf. Thanks, hopefully I’ll get used to this software so I wont’ need to ask so many favors.

Use your creative, artistic, and/or craftsman like qualities. Build your foundation in your mind by learning from shapers, not programmers. The ASP 3000 is an incredible tool. Watching veteran shaper, Spencer Kellogg, use his machine w/ ASP 3000 was infatuating for me. When I think in the opposite direction you guys are going at it, I want to puke.
Well… not puke, but really, aren’t you guys just taking Brom’s fish off of his web-site and going to Kinkos? It’s a lot different than actually making something on your own. I guess it’s a difference of how we all learned how to progress our work. Or, maybe I’m just missing something.
Actually I drew that one all by my little lonesome–with you know, 30 or so years of development on the shape done for me, and pics on the internet–those things aren’t my fault, I am just in the world with those things and I look and think.
I learned what makes sense on fish temps and rockers from Steve Brom and others, Alder, LM, G&S, CI, Frye, Hynson, people here, etc, modified, played with them until I can do a fish on APS (for my own use and maybe a grom here or there) in about 7 minutes, all tolled.
Thing is, APS is just 2D imaging, as is a pencil-- You dim them right and rocker them right, and they make sense.
Ultimately, you gotta make the 3D object, but the more I play with APS3000, the better I get at thinking about it all. I think any open-minded shaper would tell you that it’s way more fun and educational to be able to draw, see, and integrate your ideas faster–
synthesis is when you take what you have and make something new using that stuff.
I erased the one Brom image file on my computer and ditched the temp I’d traced in honor of what I learned from him by looking at his boards–even though the magic happens in the third and fourth dims
