Looking to make an EPS home depot board

I am a college art student who has been surfing for a long time. I want to get into shaping and after doing a lot of searching i think i want to make an eps board for my first one due to the low cost. Does anyone know if theres a link that explains how to make the eps boards. I have a book on regular surfboard shaping but it seems that this is different. Please send me any information you have.

Should get you started. It got me going.

I went to home depot today and all they had was the pink eps foam 2" thick and only 2 feet wide. I’ve seen some people posting the large blocks. Is it possible to get a decent rocker with the pink stuff?

sure it was eps?

most likley, pink=xps=delam

It’s waterproof extruded, will delam and bubble.

Bend it by making a rocker table or lay it atop an old board, shape, glass one side, let set, it will hold the rocker.

You can get enough foam from a foam supplier to make a 10’ board out of 2 lbs EPS for $40. Is the Home depot stuff cheap enough to make it worth the hassles associated with it?

What do you mean by a foam supplier? Do you mean a surfboard foam supplier or is it something different?

I went the 1lb eps route on my first (Lowes still has - here in MD - 1" x 4’ x8’ sheets of white eps) - you will spend a lot of money on the fiberglass + resin + your time too… Second board was a hot-wired 2lb eps.

Check out Cellofoam - they have several factories around the country & the one near me (in VA) doesn’t have a minimum order for blocks under 8’ that you pickup. I got three 12" x 12" x 96" blocks for about 50 - 60 dollars which, after some “interesting” hotwire experiments, came out to 4 “blanks”.

There are several threads on the site with eps sourcing info.

Good luck - the $14 blank thread hooked me too…

The place I went to supplies foam for architectural embellishments http://www.bayfoam.com/bayfoam/default.asp

EPS is usually pretty easy to find. Just takes a while to find a place that has the ability to supply you with blocks. I found Bay foam through an online yellow pages.

I found a place that makes custom eps foam. They wanted a ton of money to make the exact size i wanted but for a 8’x4’x24" they want $175. It’s enough foam to make 8 boards so it averages to about $20 a board.

Awesome
