Starting to shape my own board. I’m a bit wary about the glassing part and may decide to have this part done by a local pro. Any suggestions of where I can take my shaped blank to be glassed? Who does really good work within driving distance of the LA County coast and what would the glassing run$$$ and would there be a long wait for a typical 10’ Volan job? Or should I just jump in headfirst, get glassing 101, and clean out the garage and try to do it myself? Thanks.
It would be a shame to see your shaping efforts on a 10’ board turn to a disaster in the glassing process. Although you need to at least ry it. I would get it glassed professionally this time, and try it yourself on a shorter board next time. Won’t cost as much for a shorter board, or take quite as long either. Where I go in Orange County, it cost approx. $235 for glassing a 9’6" with a simple paint job and 6/6oz deck and 6oz bottom. Takes 4-5 weeks at this glasser. Good luck.>>> Starting to shape my own board. go to Aquatech in Marina Del Rey, owned/operated by Scott Anderson. not sure what a volan job would cost but its the only place in L.A. that i know of. he does beautiful longboards, so i’m sure he’d do a great job. he’s at 4065 Glencoe Av. phone is 310.578.5860 they’re in the back of the industrial complex. tell him his cousin Bruce sent you. there’s also plenty in O.C., i think 3-4 in the same complex as FoamEZ(The Surfboard Factory, and Aloha Glassing are two down there that are good i know). have a pro do the job, it’s well worth it…unless you really want to become a glasser. mark your fins, tell them exactly what you want, you’ll be stoked.
Bruce - \ Thanks for the tip, bro. I’ll check out aquatech. Mahalo Grant. Good advice. Will do. Pro-glasser seems the way to go first time around. Also,I have a junker 9’6" that I’ll try to strip and reglass for practice. If I can deal with that and happy with the results, I’ll try the glassing bit on my second board. surferdog, Sorry I’m late on this post, just saw it. Depending on where you live, I STRONGLY recommend that you try SHORELINE in Hermosa Beach. They glass for Hap Jacobs, and that’s where I get all my boards glassed. Mike Collins (owner) has been glassing since the 60s. Their specialty is longboards and Volan. All their jobs are absolutely beautiful. Plus, Mike’s a really cool guy. My friend at Longboard magazine referred me to him some time ago. I priced other places in the area, and for the quality, they are the best value around, in my opinion. If you want to see a couple examples, check out the two boards I’ve posted in the board forum, under longboards, the Leaf model and the Lord Hunt model. Shoreline glassed both of these boards. Or you can just check out any Hap Jacobs board…that’s the kind of quality you’ll get. Post a response to this to let me know if you’re interested, and I’ll get you the contact info, unless you just want to call information. Hope this helps…deeb…
