LOSS OF A FRIEND - MAUI LEGEND

“Moon” (James Kauhane) died of a stroke on his way to surf. A full blooded Hawaiian born and raised in Lahaina, Moon was known all over Maui as the quiet Duke of Maui. He was a waterman known throughout the island for his spirit of Aloha. Moon was a personal friend for several years with whom I surfed and paddled every day seven days a week at dawn. Many of you know what it is like to lose a very close friend and many here find it so difficult to comprehend he is gone. Service and paddleout ceremony will be at Launiopoku Park Friday at 10:am. Life is fragile…love each other today!

Mahalo to all,

Richard

I am sorry for your (and our) loss.

Aloha

“Uncle” Bill

Richard,

I am very sorry about you’re friend. It sounds like he was a wonderful man and will be missed. I hope and pray his familyand friends are alright considering the circumstance. Mike

I morn the passing of any great waterman, with every one the heart of surfing is a little emptier.Sorry for your loss.

His journey begins, may we all learn from his deeds and his spirit of Aloha live on in those he left behind, I’ll dedicate a wave in his honour.

Richard,

So many, like Moon, with deep roots in surfing, are slipping away from us. We are seeing the passing of an era in surfing, and the men involved, that laid the foundation of the sport. It is a loss to all.

Yes he was a great guy, an excellent surfer and made his on boards. He took alot of us haole transplants under his wing. Don’t hang around the Cove much these days, but will miss seeing him out at Kanaha. Lowel

Aloha Richard…

Auwe!

Yes those who lived with true aloha are passing from us with every year.

perhaps all we can do to honor them

is to do our best to live with as much aloha(the Ha/Mana in our trilogy view of existance) as we can

in the time we have left on this level of existence.

And yes, he will always be in the lineup with you watching over his friends

just be sure to say hello when you paddle out…

A little saying that popped into my head last year trying to figure out why so many family and friends were unexpectantly passing on. Made me realize the moments are so fleeting that you really need to struggle to make the most of them while you can… Sounds like you did…

Hearts and prayers to all affected there…
