Hi everyone, greetings from Portugal. This is my first post in Swaylocks, hope you can help me.I am building some things that look like surfboards since 2010,since the first day swaylocks has save me a lot of trouble.
Now i am going to make my number #15, and i need some help on entry rocker and exit rocker numbers for a 5'7 19.5" 2.3" dumpster diver type, dims will be N13.2" W19.5" T15",and rocker numbers i am thinking about 4.5" nose tip,1" at one foot from nose, then 0,8" at one foot from tail accelerating to 2.25" at tail tip,the bottom will be a shallow single to double concave maybe 0.25" deep . Does this numbers seem to be all right ,thanks in advance for your help.
The board is not for me, is for a friend of mine is about 150lb and 5'7" tall, is a good surfer and a strong paddler. This board is for the summer waves a sort of groveler board. I surf in the central coast of Portugal beteween Figueira da Foz and Nazaré, its a beachbreak with good waves in the Summer, but doesnt handle bigger than 6 feet swells, because of that in the winter if we want to surf we have to go to Peniche, 60 miles south.
Back to the board, i made recently a 5'10 hypto crypto type board for myself with 4.6" nose and 1.2"@1'N and the board goes really good in 2 to 5 feet waves, bigger than 5 feet and its hard to bury the rail to do turns.
Because this one is a bit smaller than the 5'10 i think i will go with 4.25" nose and 1.1"@1'N, in my opinion 1.9@1'N it is bit to high and the board will not paddle that good(thats my opinion, i may be wrong i am still trying to understand the shaping science
Entry rocker is kind of a personal touch. There's a reason why the custom rocker catalog at USBlanks is so extensive. That said, none of the stock rockers in their catalog have an entry that low. Their catalog, as well as the catalogs of other brands, are generally available online. Check 'em out for reference - it can't hurt.
If you've tried it that low and it worked for you, go for it.
1" entry would work fine. You could even get away with 15/16" or 7/8" on a 5'7". It will paddle fast, catch waves easy, and fly down the line. I would suggest that .25 inch of concave is too deep, try .125 or no deeper than .1875. A little "vee" behind the fin cluster will help relieve the sticky-ness of the flatter front rocker.
I must totally apologise for the dim I gave. I got it scrambled in my brain as @1/2'!!! VERY SORRY!
Yes, 1.1"@12"N sounds good! Anything in the 0.85" to 1.1" should work brilliantly for a groveler with 4.25" nose rocker. For what its worth I'd go 1 1/16"@12"N but I should warn you I'm no super guru!
My next board is going to be similar, but probably 5'9" 20.5" 2.5" with light double concave into deep double concave. the FW potatos turned me onto these deep double concaves, they keep the flow orientated for good lift in poor conditions and let the board work as a quad in two halves with a pronounced V in between. The V is 4mm above than the rail at 12"T with 8mm of concave either side (measured off rail-rail datum, not rail to stringer). The deep concave effectively flattens the centreline rocker further, speeding it up down the line, but when put on a rail its still got a decent rocker. Its just another way of doing it, and I reckon Byron's single into V would do much the same and be a way easier build (my boards up to now have had single into V and they work just great, but I reiterate I'm certainly no guru and only a small board count!!!). Also curious how a deep double concave would work with thruster in weak conditions, anyone?
Me, I surf Pembrokeshire, Cornwall, Northumberland, and try to get out to Arrifana / Amado once a year. I love that region and come back chilled and surfed out. This last year I've been pretty limited with surfing as I've just had twins, but we're planning on doing a road trip to Portugal for November and December. STOKED!!!
Thanks for the replies, been searching in various rocker catalogs and in the Artic Foam catolog they have a lot of rockers similar to the one I'm shaping.I am going with 1 1/8"@1'N with slight vee in the nose then starting the concave with max depth between feet no deeper than 3/16" then fades to a subtle double concave bettwen the fins to a ligth vee out the tail.I have started shaping the rocker today, the dims look good on the board.
Hey Martymo, the vicentine coast is awesome, good waves in the middle of a natural park, if you are planning on staying in the Peniche area for same days, say something and we can do some surf .October and November are the best months for surfing in this area and a lot of off-shore wind days.
