There has been considerable information posted on the effects of Hard Vs. soft rails. What are the characteristics of Low Volume vs. Medium Volume and Full Volume hard rails? Thanks, Magoo
what about the effects of low volume 50-50 rails vs boxy 50-50’s ?
lower volume rails for bigger waves, boxier for smaller mushier stuff. a thinner rail will set/sink in easier on a bigger juicier wave but tend to bog on smaller slower waves. board thickness also dictates rail contour somewhat. thicker boards need more tapered rails while thinner boards can go boxier(is that a word?) thats my understanding anyway. basically a thicker rail has more float and takes more force to sink into the wave. i think rail volume has a big effect on floatation, more than center width. the 6’5" in the shortboard pics was one that would have ridden better with lower rails. always felt too corky and unstable to me. boys, correct me if i’m wrong… bruce

ve found that a curvy template, extra rocker and full volume at the edges, no matter what the board
s thickness, all tend to enhance full-length, hard downrails.
