Lowdown on S7 surfboards?

Hi,

I posted this and got mixed reviews on the surfermag BB and was wondering what people here know about these boards. The guy at our local shop has taken them in and I looked at them. They were handshaped but someone else told me they were made in China.(?) What’s up with that? I can understand molded-epoxy shapes being mass-produced but have they taught Chinese factory workers to shape now too? or this just some vicious rumour?

Peace

sharkboy,

i have an article on the seven superfish that may clear up some things for you, but it’s too big to upload here. if you want, you can email me and i’ll email it to you. my email address is druandgina@grandecom.net.

I believe they are made in Thailand.

made in Thailand at the Cobra factory.

saw a few this weekend…wasn’t impressed.

Owners mentioned they dinged easily; looked like stock 4/4x4 glass jobs and lousy PE resin.

Shape was pretty rough…lotta hard edges along the rail bands; I think this is something they’re actually shooting for, for whatever reason.

Boards are expensive here…obviously these boards fill a market, and the people I talked too were pleased with the performance. That said, for the most part, these same people started surfing within the last few years, in Canada, where it doesn’t get all that good (despite TSJ would have you believe); usually mushburgers and moved to this board from a far too small, too narrow thruster, or down from a funboard. Bound to be positive reviews in light of those experiences.

Standard fragile pu/pe, with a questionable shape and zero longevity. Better to save your bucks or spend it on a good used board…Hand shaped by a pair of hands that is used to pulling from molds is no better than hand shaped from someone with zero experience.

These boards are cheap and easy to spot. However, there is a fellow in Oregon with a label called “7” who makes quite nice boards. You can read about him at “oregonsurf.com

I have a S7 Super Fish is it a great board. Was designed by an Aussie guy, Gary Loveridge from the central coast - I spoke to him and he gets a royatly from everyone sold. He is very happy with the qulaity and replication of his shape. The glass job is actually 1 x 6 + 1 x 4 deck and 1 x 4 + 6 oz patch on the bottom. The board itself is great to ride, probably the fastest board I’ve ridden in small surf for sure.

Also all the boards Global Surf / Cobra produce now are machine shaped now apparently www.surfindustries.com/video/cnc.wmv

I get a TON of these in for repair. The ding is always in the exact same spot, and follows with the exact same response from everyone. “I dont even know how it happened”. If you are looking at the deck the left side of the tail folds up and cracks along the bottom of the rail into the buttcrack. Not sure if when they are sanding they are cutting off too much weave or what but like I said its almost identical dings on every one.
