A long, long time ago there was a flouro red/orange pigment available. I have no idea if it's still around. When I worked at Jim Phillips place we used it for some fin sheets. They were BRIGHT and translucent so they really lit up in the sun, but they weren't truly luminous or glow-in-the-dark. Sounds like a truly demented undertaking, have fun!
hmmm i think it would be sick to do a board with bamboo veneers and glow rails. that way in the dark all you see is the outline.
ive been inspired now!
…lost advertised a glow-in-the-dark board in a board forum (don’t recall which mag) some time ago. Only saw the ad once.
i cant find anyone who sells a “glow” powder. everything ive found is major suppliers for big businesses.
anyone have an idea where to get a small amount? kind of want to play with this stuff for a variety of different things.
Try your local automotive paint supplier.
I’ve found they can get all sorts of stuff that will work with epoxy resins.
Good luck
i did a luminous board many years ago… i was still working at newline then so its at least 15 years. i used a luminous tshirt screen ink… i dissolved the stuff then removed the powder and mixed it with water until i could spray it. it looked great but the boys were always worried they would be bait for an ocean predator…
Fish are typically attracted to stuff that glows…
Just wait untill it’s dark to see it glow…
Sounds scary to me, but I’m also hesitant with glitters on the bottom of a board.
I made fins with big eyes to counteract that.
I would love to see an underwater action photo!!!
Move to proove Chipper!!!
Paints, Powders etc> http://glowinc.com No affiliation yadda yadda.......
just make some glow in the dark wax
well, I laid up three 8x10" panels yesterday [15th september 2009].....
Later, when I was talking to Ross's dad , here at the Longboards Scarborough shop , he mentioned that when HE did "glow in the dark stuff' , in those days , it glowed because it had URANIUM in it ?! yikes .....
[ I kinda wish that they wrote what the ..er..."ingredients" of THIS stuff is , on the jar , really !]
I only used about 1% powder , to the quantity of resin ...it will be curious to see how much more 'glowing' it would be , were I to use 10% next time ??
.....to be continued.....
cheers !
ben
[ p..s. - because the photos disappeared [?!] , this is an 'edited' post ...the original posting was on the 16th september, 2009 ! ]
…a panel using 10 to 20% of the luminous powder per 500mls of resin …it REALLY glows , now !!..i made another panel the other day …
cheers

Hey Chip...
Your'e a one, truly one of a kind...
Hey but, send me some fins, It'll be a talking point...my mate Chip of the Luminous Fins!
Josh
I do not believe this is the real Ben otherwise we’d have no less that 17 pictures of the inside of the “chipers” closet in various stages of fin illumination… Ha!
i can see your point taylor but unfortunately it really is me !
since using a mate’s apple mac computer occassionally , i’ve been unable to post shots any more ho hum
if you like , besides sending ‘me mate josh[snr]’ some luminous fin panel , i could also send YOU one [if you like cutting out and foiling fcs fins , that is ?!]
cheers josh and taylor

by the way , sorry if these shots are a little unsharp...these photos were taken , handheld, at 1/8th second...my tripod broke...bummer...]
Chip, those fins are about the coolest ever. I been wanting to experiment with this stuff and was wondering what the mix ratio would be.Thanks for posting!
