So I’ve been asked if I could give a workshop on shaping/glassing. I’m certainly still a novice but capable of showing the minimum for a 1st timer to get a board out. The thing is I originally thought it would be a demo kind of thing where I could bring in 3 boards prepped to different stages and not have to wait for resin to cure to go onto next stage, but he was hoping everyone could walk out with their own boards they built over a couple sessions.
Is it possible to have a shaping / glassing class where everyone makes their own board? I can see how shaping could work, just a bunch of stands in a room and just suffer a bit from bad lighting, but glassing?
Rick, I think that would be the best way to do a class. A friend of mine in Jersey told me about a class at a local community college but it is a build 1 board and raffle it off at the end deal. Not interesting to me. Board building is a hands on job and I think a class should be also. Even if the shape does suffer because of lighting it would help a person progress to watch and listen to a teacher then apply what they have just seen, less time to forget a step and it gives a chance for some constructive criticism also.
Yeah, I hear ya. The guy doing the NJ CC class is on here all the time, he’s has actually be the guy taught me alot!
We’ll see. I’m meeting with the studio manager tomorrow to talk about what can be done. Should be cool though. Not taking it too seriuosly just looking to help some people out, with the amount of knowledge i have.
Maybe shape and send out for glassing would be a good option for now.
I have had some exerience in his feild, I did a few demonstrations and ding repairs at a school , to get them intrested then took a few kids for work experience. one at atime. they built a board for cost.
Sounds like a great idea. I’ve taught Vo-Tech students on a one-to-one basis and it worked out good. They ended up shaping boards better than the instructor. Maybe Keith Melville could chime in and give his 2 cents about his shaping sessions.
