Making a board for a Grom!

I am making a surfboard for my friends little brother and would like to get some opinions on what dimensions I should use for this kid. He is 4’9" tall and weighs 65 lbs. I am making him a short board, but would like to know what would work best in San Diego surf(Oceanside Pier Area). If you could help me at all on this subject, please get back to me.

I just made several 5’8"s for groms and they’re all ripping on them. If this grom can already surf somewhat a 5’8 out of a 5’9R is sufficient for that oceanside beachbreak mush! just skin the blank and you will get 2"+ of thickness, widen up the nose if he’s a weak paddler say 12.5-13", 18.5middle, 14" sqwashtail, a nosecone and dull fins for safety (kookfactor).

Surfhungry: Are there any fin placement considerations on these shorter boards for lighter riders? Where would you place a cluster of FCS- YU template tri fins for example? Typical placement 11.5"up, 1 1/8" in, toe 1/4", cant up to the glasser! Fins are very important and everyone should have a variety, it can make a dog into a pedigree. The current grom believe is less rake on the sides more rake in the center to maximise snap/pivot tighter off the top in hollow beachbreaks. MIX AND MATCH!!!

For myself(135#,5’-8") I PREFER: G-3s over the 3000s the 3s have a better foil. The 3000s are to economized in foil, and creat too much drag.I do use a YU or a GPR center fin when it gets alittle meaty,or YUs all-the-way around. ALSO[blush]n small days it’s not unlike me to have G-1000s or GXs in my board. Sometimes: I use 1000s or Xs with a G-2/G-6 center.Herb.
