making a home made board

after seeing the thread that sUgOi posted, i started thinking, damn… it must not be too hard to make my own board…

not that your board was bad… i think that thing is gnarly!

so i started thinking, if i actually had to make a foam template

before i started cutting my actual shape out, would it be too crazy to make an almost flat deck…

basically a board that from where you stand on the deck to the nose of the baord have a one inch difference

and on the bottom of the board have a two inch rocker…

or would that be too little???

i would like to try making my own board from scratch

i’m already making my own fins so why not do the whole thing? right?

how much did it run for the DIY’ers around here (in the states… hell, why not out of this country too)

and how long did it take to make???

how would i go about making a hot wire as well???

knowledge is power

I just finished shaping my first board a few weeks ago. I’ve took a few weeks hiatus to Peru before glassing and putting the finboxes in, but that will all come soon enough.

In regards to time/cost: total materials for the actual board ended up costing around $175, including the Lokbox fins and boxes. I had just recently moved out of my parents house to an apartment a few hours away, so i had nothing but a screwdriver in the way of tools. No more dipping into dad’s toolbox. So starting from scratch, and including old school hand planer, measuring tools, saw, surform, etc. i spent no more than $100. Rickety bucket-style shaping stands cost me about $40 to make. So all together a little over $300.

As for time: between fulltime work and fulltime school and fulltime girlfriend, i spent about a month thinking about what i needed and studying up, 2 months gathering and preparing stands, tools, etc., and when i finally got to the shaping, about a month for the board. (took forever to shape because i have to drive across town to use a friend’s backyard. its about 90 degrees with midday rain here everyday in the summer, so shaping had to take place in the early morning or after dark due to white light on the foam or rain, and the intense heat.)

So there’s a brief rundown of a newbie backyard shaper with no backyard.

i think that right there is the perfect responce… i live in orlando so i feel ya on the rain and all that good stuff…

lately been trying to pump out shapes but no luck due to rain… but if making a home made board only cost $175 with fin boxes then it’s on!

thank you once again!

Have a moment with the search tool, you’ll find loadsa good stuff. I just finished my first board with EPS and Epoxy and it wasn’t rocket science. Don’t expect to be pumping out Al Generics from day one but you can definatly get a decent board out from your first try, thanks to the wealth of info and experience on Swaylocks.
