Hello Herb, I’ll take any info you throw my way. Do you cast solid first and then mill the cavity in the boxes? Thanks Heaps for the offer.
Ths turned into an interesting thread, i would be very interested to see a casting thread herb.
So after all that work i fucked up… drilled sliped when i drilling the hole for the leash plug and ended up taking out a little extra foam on the side under the lip of the epoxy. Can i stuff it with some cloth and some foam when i glass in the plug will it still hold ok or is it now i have a major chance that its just going to rip out. So pissed that I did it, at least im learning a ton on my first board so i guess im allowed to make mistakes it just totally sucks doing it.
Hey Krep, If the hole in the glass layer is the right size, you can use a piece of 2 or 4 oz. cloth (or two) wrapped around the box with milled fibers mixed in the epoxy. This is ONLY if your glass is the right size. This may be okay if this is so. If the blank is X or EPS beware of the exotherm of the resin. If you pour in too much at a time it will melt the foam. This could be a benefit if you don't have to re-work the glass. If it is only foam removed this will make the plug "flare out" under your lam and be much stronger to resist pull out. Good Luck.
ya the blank is an EPS blank from greenlight. The hole in the glass is the right size and i probably ended up taking out an extra 1/4 inch of foam on the one side I have have some very slow epoxy resin that i used for my fin boxes that i was going to use so i hope it doesnt get too hot.

Somebody put a dollar leashplug in an envelope and mail it to this guy. How 'bout it?

Yep on the same page w/McDing
Hey Krep, if you want, PM your address & I'll mail you a 1" plug. My swaylocks good deed for the year :)
I'm just catching this thread....fricking classic! I second sending the guy some plugs so he doesn't have to go through the ordeal of sourcing stainless steel bar stock, carbon fiber re-bar, or kelvar reinforced Pixie Sticks.

krep,
just fill the hole with epoxy, slam the plug in. Cover with a sheet of wax paper, and put a ziplock bag full of ice on top of the plug, and under the plug. The ziplock bag will keep the plug from floating out, and the ice will keep the epoxy from therming out and melting your foam. keep it on there for at least 1 hr, or until the epoxy gets gummy. Then take it off and let it harden up.
had not even thought about Ice thats a good call
well the plug is in and i guess ill find out how i did in a few hours
I've used a Dremel cutoff wheel to cut a section of stainless steel spoon handle for the crossbar. I poured a mix of epoxy in a little cup with a waxed stick inside for the depression. After cross drilling for the spoon handle, I used some 5 minute epoxy to hold it in place.
It was the middle of the night on a Sunday and I needed it to have the board ready on Monday.
cold wet rags and a fan work for me.
herb
"Cold wet rags and a fan" works for me too. But it doesn't have anything to do with surfboards.
instead of ice bags............it eliminates the exo-therm.
herb
i didn’t read the whole thread just some parts… leash loop is out?
at like 12 cents a plug vs a buck or more...............do the math.
