making a winged keel / "star fin "..3rd shade / surffoils ....

hi guys !

further to our phone conversations / facebook pages …

here [for anyone else who may be interested ? ] is the intended ‘base’, so far …

photo 4be709ef-0b73-4808-9561-65368f0fa723_zps8be793e1.jpg

I also thought I had a batik inlay one , but perhaps that is now with CassS ,  or Josh Dowling ? [ I  probably need to take photos of what I send people , I think !]

the plan is

  plan A …

cut a groove in the fin , foil some offcuts into the winged bit shape , wedge in the groove…  cut part of fin above the groove off , flush to wing.

  plan B …

glass [? with rovings / cloth , like the glassed on fin technique ] the tip onto [reshaped tip?] existing spitfire …

john harris ?   others who have made some ? … comments , please , guys ?

  cheers !

  ben

Hi Ben.

I would have layed it up in two halves (over a form that had the correct “bend” at the end for the winglet). Then stuck the two halves together and cut and foiled it all.

I think Plan A might not be strong enough and Plan B might add too much bulk to the joined areas.

But I could be wrong.

hi Rohan !

plan RDM sounds like the best idea …

too late this time  , but … maybe … if there is a 'next time ', eh ?

cheers !

Hi Ben, I spoke to Cheyne a few days ago and he said that initially the 'wings ’ were thick and foiled but they evolved into thinner blades.

Maybe do the wings as one thin piece and then attach the foiled wings to the base.

Go with Plan B but start with thin wings so you don’t over bulk the connection.

P.S. Your highly tuned hockey fins look amazing.

cheers Brett !

I’ll give it a shot …yep ,I  can always add MORE layers of cloth to the winged bits [ 'if 'needed…]

thanks [ re : the p.s.]  … all credit for the original templates goes to blair mickeljohn ,  for blowing my mind with surfing those templates in the 1990s , and making me think  a bit …  And ,  yep , the foiling sure was a challenge . I may not have done them , without a mate knowing a kneeboarder , Greg ,  who wanted a [? few?] set[s?] .  Also,  luckily , he [Greg] had an original that he could leave with me  to help me get my head around the double-foiling needed , on the rear fin . He also wants a QUAD set , and a back finboxed one … 8 hockey stick fins  , in all !  … [ …hmmmmn… " WHAT have I started ?! "   :)  ]

Harris used to make some winged fins that were pretty cool - oops I see u already mentioned him

Indeed huck , I’ll try contacting him again [facebook]

as did bob beresford [ of ‘cutloose surfboards’ ‘fame’]

My brother showed me a small back one , originally made for a finbox that he modified [tabbed] , when fcs appeared …

Tell him to come back to Swaylocks, we miss him!

nice shot of your dog by the way , Ro !
