I’ve glass the bottom already and I was wondering, is it necessary to cut fiberglass big enough to wrap around the rails towards the bottom when glassing the top or can I just cut a piece that is big enough just to overlaps with the bottom glass(if it’s confusing, just picture the fiberglass being like griptape on a skateboard not going passed where the rails start)? if you know what i mean.
Nice. Glassing in the street. I would say you could do it since the board is so short. But then any ding on the edge would be a stress riser. But you should fallow the advise of someone who knows what they are talking about with glass.
You have built shaping/glassing racks, kinda says you’ll likely do this again. I’d wrap the deck lamination, if nothing else for the experience. Plus it’s easier to sand flush the bottom lap…
A few minutes on one tiny board done outside probably not a big deal … just hope you realize, a dust mask is not going to protect you from breathing polyester resin fumes
Thanks for all the responses guys! I’m definitely going to wrap it and add add another 4oz on top. I guess I’m just being to impatient. I just want to test this badboy out so badly!
To Durbs,
By spoon do you mean like a miniature bellyboard/kneeboard contraption? before you mentioned that i was planning on making something of that sort. do you have any pictures of something i should aim for? i look at vegabondsurf or something where there were a bunch of paipos and i was going to make something like that.
As for getting a mask I think I’ll invest in those 30 dollar masks with the crazy looking filters and what not.
i glassed the deck today and did a tone on tone resin tint type deal. i’m pretty stoked on the way it turned out:
I’m going to add another 4oz. on top and I was wondering, If I’m going to add a logo printed on rice paper, do I put it in between the two layers of fiberglass or on top of both, just under the hot coat?
Another thing was, do any of you guys not sand the board after it’s hot coated? My friend just did his hotcoat today and I was thinking, instead of spending more money for glossing materials, why not just leave it the way it is after it’s hotcoated?
That looks realy nice man. I hope you will do a test for your logo. I've seen some guys work real hard on a board and then the rice paper does something funky. I tried to get away with a nice hot coat since allot of wet sanding and polishing does not realy excite me. But I couldn't overlook a few nibs on my deck. If you have enough fill in the cloth you can hot coat it with regular resin and not sand if you are pleased with it. you will have to sand the bead at the tape line. You can read in the archives about glosses.
I like the thin lines you have in that swirl. Looking good!
cheers man! yeah I think I’ll do a test since at the surf shop i work at in cornwall, england, they’ve done boards where they use normal printers on the decor paper(rice paper) and after it’s all glassed into the board, the ink reacts with the resin and a fuzzy yellow outline forms around the logo. all his other boards have decor paper with screenprinted logos and they all look ace.
as for the hot coat i think i’ll do that: “If you have enough fill in the cloth you can hot coat it with regular resin and not sand if you are pleased with it. you will have to sand the bead at the tape line.”
thanks I 'm going to just keep experimenting with resin tints and hopefully I can come up with some gnarly stuff!
So I haven’t showed you guys all the in between steps but most of it is on my blog. I just resined on the fins this morning. I just need to fin rope it, then hot coat the whole thing and I’m done! I’m debating if I should put a leash plug it in.
i semi finished making my board but i took it to 56 street at newport beach to test it out and man it is a super fun board. it’s catches waves super easily because of all the volume in the nose and it rides super loose. i’m gonna have to say that my first board is a success!
Everyone started someplace! It’s great you tried your hand an making your own board! I may suggest using a material called Sintra for making templates. It’s easy to work with. It’s sheet PVC. Get it in 1mm. You can cut it with house sissors and sand it to shape. Much easier then other materials for making templates. =)
