I unclamped my blank to find that my glue didn’t stick. I used ‘eco glue’ out of the Kit. The glue seems dusty/powdery on the outside but on the inside still seems like it did out of the bag (i gave it 10hrs to dry). I would like to know why the glue didn’t adhere, we were working in colder temps 55-ish.----- What glue should i use now that that didnt work? (elmers white school glue?)
My next step is to decide on the template---- I am looking at a mini simmons but am unsure what size to do. It seems everyone is using small sizes like (5’2")
right now I am going to use a template for 6’ x 23" ----any thoughts on how thick i should make it (im 5’11" at 165lbs)???
I’m 5’11’’ and 200 lb! i ride a 5’6’’ x 22 x 2.75, flat deck full round rails, single concave through all the board an it works amazing! You can go 5’3’’ x 21 1/2 x 2.5… 6’0’’ x 23 is a HUGE mini simmons, it get’s really hard to turn at about 5’8’'. good luck! Here are some pictures of mine, simmons inspired, thinner tail, quad.
I will definitly go shorter. From what I’ve seen everyone than what I was going for, Its my first board so i was trying to follow a template but I will use the smaller template.
Do you think you kept a pretty consistant thickness across the entire board?
I love your paint man, how’d you do that. I was thinking id just tint the glass,
the logo is on standard printer paper this time (i cut around it) but it’s best printed on rice paper and i used exactly that, kids fingerpaint! I didn’t knew the name in english… This is a 5’8 i made before, with fingerpaint.
that bord has no resin yet (in the picture) its just tape and the same paint i use on the other. That tail is called a half moon tail with wings. I wanted to give the board more pivot points, to loosen it up but it actually ended up being stifier than the other one. But with a lot more drive, it’s my “step up” mini simmons, for bigger surf or really small.
The Vee bottom is great in the tail, specially for wide ones. I’ve never tried it on a twin fin, but i have a diamond quad (11.5 inches wide at the end of the tail, the biginning of the diamond) that is extremelly loose. It also has bevelled rails that continue the vee of the tail, but with a light single concave in the middle of the board, vee again on the nose. Its the best bottom design i’ve made so far…
So I am about to glass the board and was thinking of painting the foam and just clear glass. I know i need to us specific types of paint but still had questions.
What kind of spraying system could I use? I was thinking of going to a hobby shop to see what they might have.
Also can you think of any downsides/things to watch out for??
Use water based acrylic or tempura paints. Tape off the stringer. Don’t lay it down too thick or you can get some crystalization under the lam. You can spray it with a gun, airbrush, or just use a brush for that ghetto board look. Some use rattle cans, but I don’t because of the solvent in the spray. Mike
1st) In the glassing video that I watched it seemed like he just laid the cloth right over the boxes and then gooped resin in there. How do you ever get the fins in there if theres cloth and resin in the box.
2nd) I was wondering if anyone has ever made replacable fins out of wood. I had some cool wood and i wanted to make fins out of them. so i was going to try to recreate my FCS fins and then drop these new wood ones into the boxes.
Dont know about the rest but I have made some
ply fins with a layer of 200g on each side much much
stiffer than some little side bites I made and just oiled.
The next set will have more cloth to make them stiffer
again.
Pic out of the board is with hotcoat before sanding, there is a little green
pigment in the lam left over epoxy from a board.
Pick in board sanded to 400 But wil prob scuff and give another coat.
