making twin keels.....

i got a question for u fin gurus… if i am planning on making ur regualr twin keels, out of fiberglass, how many layers of 6 oz cloth should i use? ill be using regualar poly resin, and doing it over a months spand or so. how many layers? also, how thick shoudl the base be? thanks, any fin help is appreciated. as i thought about buying them, and still are sorta, but the fish’s owner is cheap, and poor. and not looking to pay 70$ for nice ply fins already made. although i would’ve. thanks dj

can’t cough up 70 bucks? 70 bucks?come on…ur kidding right? lunch is 10 bucks!Where do you live in your car?Surfers can be so cheap. Then spend 70 bucks on weed!Months to lay up a fin???

first of all, im not paying for it. its a friends board, who is trying to shape his first board with my help. if he had it he’d be willing to pay im sure. but hes broke, and doesn’t so i cant change that. it leaves me with alternate solutions…a) find a plce that makes fiberglass keels ??? or b) make it myself. the reason i said a month is because it would be sorta side thing, just while waiting for stuff to gell or something. i’m busy making 3 other boards at the moment. dj

Use wood, just as easy to shape and you dont have to do all that glassing. Looks bitchin too.

hr, i agree on the looks…and if its as easy to shpe i will. from my understanding it is made from 9 ply marine plywood. i am not sure where i can find this… i guess i’ll start calling around. any suggestions where to start? my only concern is foiling them…i have basic knowledge on fins. very little on keels…i would assume the a single foiled keel would flow the same as a thruster or longboard fin. also…what is the foiling done with?? what tool i mean. any tips are appreciated. dj

you can foil with anything, a grinder, sandpaper if its wood a surform works great etc etc. http://www.surfboardglassing.com

contact Paul Jensen-he posts here regularly. He can make you an unreal set of fins for whatever your need is…

do as HR says… go to a local furniture maker and dive in his dumpster when he ain’t lookin’ I like 3/8" 9 ply but many use 1/2" 9 ply which is readily available. Got disc? 36Grit resin backed disc (dark red) is very accurate and fairly quick. Finish with hand sanding and a block. I keep the wood rough to give it some tooth. If the board shape comes out good, maybe your ‘friend’ could save up and kick down for some fins from some local talent… …but maybe that won’t matter this time. Good luck.

your supposed to do it with plywood, but i didnt have any so just used some scrap 3/4" thick pine we had laying around the house. had trouble finding resources for fin foiling though, so just did what i thought would work the best. It looks like a long teardrop, 5/8" almost right at the leading edge, and fading all the way through into the trailing edge.

If you are interested, and If you live in NorCal, email me I’ve got a 2’x4’x 3/8" piece of mahogany marine grade (BS1088) plywood that perfect for keel fins. You could probably make 10 sets out of this piece. My price? A set made for me in return.

I don’t live in NorCal but if you would be willing to ship it to San Diego (2x4x3/8ths must weigh, what, about 8 lbs?) I’ll make you a set of fins & ship them back, and make a couple more sets to donate to the next Swaylocks raffle too.

I like your idea. Let me know how to get a hold of you. I could get the board into rectangular blanks to your dims and mail them to you.

email me, , and I’ll give you the mailing address
