making your own boardshorts

Sweet! Home made old school jams.

Sounds like a fundraiser in the making. You make them and get a tax write-off for your time and materials. Donate to Sways, they sell for whatever. Money goes to Sways. Old school jams are worn. Win win.

I’ll buy a pair. At least.

So…36" waist, is that dolphin or walrus?

My grandmother used to make me and my brother custom jams all the time too! They were great, and she always found patterns that looked cooler than the store bought ones. I believe she even tore down her old drapes out of the windows one day and made a few pairs out of them.

That reminds me of a bad experience I had in my jams, though. I was sitting on top of my cousin’s quarter pipe skateboard ramp. I couldn’t have been any older than 7 years old and I was wearing a new pair fresh off the sewing machine thinking I was the coolest 7 year old around. I decided I wanted to get down off the ramp and slid down like it was a sliding board. WORST mistake I could’ve made and there were lots of friends watching. Not only did I burn two holes right through the shorts…but I had serious burn marks on both butt cheeks for weeks. I tried so hard not to cry in front of everyone. I remember how painful it was to this day. Ahhh memories.

Hi Ryan, a 36 inch waist is a dolphin.

Myself, Im a 35 on the beach and a 41 in the carpark.

Ambrose, thanks for the pattern tips, Id really like to get an original pattern from someones granny whos been sewing since the days of peddle-machines, just to ensure some real authenticity and to make the whole project a bit special.Otherwise its a bit lame just to churn out a generic pattern and call it authentic.

A few questions for the Swaylocks crew,

Anyone got a granny with a pattern who wants to be immortalised on Swaylocks?

What are the range of sizes required, in inches please?

What about a logo? I can stitch, stencil, dye it on. Maybe scorch it on.

I want to do it, and I want to get it right so Im not ostracised from the herd later on if it all goes pear shaped.

Thanks for any info.

Birdwell Beach Britches has a website. Evelyn Birdwell makes old school no nonsense surf trunks right here in the USA. You can pick your color, fabric ( their standby surfnyl is the standard ), waist and length. You can even talk to her on the phone if you want. You can’t talk to anyone making commercially available boardshorts unless you speak Chinese. Her price isn’t a giveaway but its less than some Volcom item emblazoned with stars, skulls and strippers that looks like a skirt. Plus her trunks last so long you can get buried in 'em.

I’ve got a pair of shorts custom made by:

 Take of WAIKIKI

 Made In Hawaii

 Made for: ****

…in (as best I recall) August, 1965.

Single thickness (also offered in double thickness) orange heavy-duty nylon, white nylon 1-1/2" wide (horizontal) “competition stripe” around the middle, 31" waist, 3-button(white) + 3 eyelet lace-up fly. The suit is still in excellent condition and perhaps could be used to make a “historically accurate” set of patterns for a reproduction, if desired (keeping in mind that one of the reasons for it’s excellent condition is that it was not one of my most comfortable suits–in part a consequence of the HD nylon used).

Birdwell’s are the shizzle. You can even supply your own fabric, and they’ll

make a pair from one of their patterns. If you have an unusual body type,

you can send them a pattern, and they’ll make one of their styles, modified to fit

you.

I haven’t looked at their site lately, but they had a long-running sale on discontinued fabrics. Unfortunately, spinaker nylon is one of them. Without a doubt, the longest lasting, fastest drying fabric ever. A bit stiff when new, but super soft when broken in.

Anyway, the sale was originally 3 pair for $45. Limited to stock on hand, and color selection was limited. I think they still have some available, at $20 a pair.

Even at their regular price, they beat anything else on the market, hands down.

I have been wearing Birdwell’s exclusively, for over 30 years. Done enough business with

them so that I now get a “group discount”.

Also, not only do you speak to a family member when contacting by phone or email,

they allow folks to visit and tour the ‘factory’. They’ve been based in Santa Ana CA since 1961.

I had a look at spinnaker nylon today, its very crunchy…

Ive found a simple, jam style ,2 panel design, that has a moderate,(above knee) leg length and plenty of room at ‘eye level’.

Itd be interesting to see a Sways logo on a pair of boardshorts. There are plenty of artistic types out there.
