Maldives Info?

Heading to the Maldives in the near future and need some advice.

Due to weight restrictions I can only take one, possibly two boards. My intention is to take a 9’6” high performance single fin long board which I believe will suit most breaks over there.

My problem is the other type of board to take (if I can take another board!)

I really like the new “Firewire Flexflight” long boards, the 9’ rounded pin tail single fin in particular looks to me to be well suited for reef break type waves but on the other hand I was thinking that maybe an Alan Byrne 8’ semi gun thruster may be handy?!

Any thoughts or information would be greatly appreciated.

For the record I’m 6’3” and weight about 230lbs and have been surfing all types of waves for 40 years.

Never been to the Maldives.

Hi SF69,

Been there a couple of times, once in the main area centered around the 3 resorts

and a bit south, then another trip where we flew all the way down to Gan and brought

a boat back up through the chain over 18 days.

If you are in the main area, the LB will be great, but there are plenty of days where

a gun can be handy. There were some length restrictions on some water taxis and

shuttles and seaplanes, so you might want to check ahead on that.

If I knew what time of year you plan to go, I can better tell you how the central

area will be. I’ve seen it chest high and glassy, but also triple OH for days at a time

with the hired help apologizing (!) for the big surf, ha ha. Winds can be problematic

during certain times of the year

If you go exploring south, the waves get heavier, I liken it to many spots in the Mentawais,

with a couple open-ocean breaks which were world-class…

Have Fun!

George

Hiring a boat and heading down south at the end of July for two weeks.

So from what you’re saying the 8’ Al Byrne semi gun could come in handy?

July is just about peak swell season plus the winds are favorable. IF you have 2 boards then

the 8 footer would be a great addition. Any idea how far south mate?
