Mark Martinson

Swaylockians,

Of late I’ve happened on a few of Mark’s creations – not Surftech’s but the ones from this shaper’s hands, which have a very strong signature, beautiful continuos rocker. The ones I’ve seen have doomed decks and rails that are quite thinned out into a rather sharp down rail where the deck dives into the bottom abruptly at around 45 degrees. (longboards rails are less sharp of course). One board (don’t know what he calls it) I was particularly struck with was a 7’6"x19.5"x23.0"x16.0"x3.0" relaxed rocker, single fin, canary yellow creation that the nose and tail were thinned way out on and all the rail lines were quite sharp. The board has a very subtle single concave that ran the gammet of the board and it looked like it had great possibilities beyond a single fin set-up.It had the the Robert August label on it and it was, to say the least, unusual.

I’d be very interested in comments anyone may have about this wide flat egg or about any Mark’s work, the lines of which IMHO are impeccable.

Halcyon…

I have a 10’ Martinson (Robert August) single fin (w/FU box) stored in my shop, destined for major repair. It has a smooth low rocker, soft 60/40 rails tapering fore and aft, no edges anywhere… no bumps, angles or knuckles. The bottom is flat from nose to tail, no concave or vee. The deck has a subtle crown. Full template, ending with a soft square tail. Looks to be an all-rounder, probably for rider 175 lbs. or less, to be ridden in clean waves under 8 feet. A sweet, uncomplicated shape with very light glassing… sadly, “short term use only”.

Howzit Halcyon, Wish you would have posted this about 10 days ago. Mark was here on Kauai for a funeral memorial for Ken Ronning the surfer who had a heart attack and died at San Onefre a few weeks back. Talked to him briefly but under the circumstances board design was not the topic of the day.Aloha, Kokua

The board you are referring to is the Martinson X. I talked to Mark about this shape a couple months ago. The board is flat and fast! He has been working on the X for a few years and says the newer version works alot better than the ones that were first introduced. I have ridden Mark’s boards for a number of years and they have always been top notch!! They hold up very well and surf great! I will be adding an X to my quiver this winter.

Gamut (Gannet? Garnet? Gaboon? Gammon?) :))

Dale,

The project sounds like one for a real pro. Let me know what you think it’s worth.

Kokua,

Thanks for checking in. Sound like you’ve know Mark for a while. It would be great to check in with him but I don’t have a clue where to start.

Glide,

Thanks for clarifying things. What kind of conditions would you be surfing the X in?

Note to myself: self control!

Roy,

What’s your point?

Off to the fin shop, Rich

Hey Halcyon,

The Martinson X was profiled on surfline a while back in the ‘quiver’ section. Dimensions and a brief description by Wingnut. Here’s the link:

Hi Rich,

The 10’ Martinson belongs to a good friend who was going to throw it away… broken in half by an overhead wave. There will be no restoration to original appearance. But it will be repaired, slightly re-shaped, colored faux balsa, re- glassed, etc. Sometimes it`s fun to give a dead board new life.

Hey Retro,

The one I saw wasn’t 22.0" wide it was 23"0’ and way – way – sharp. It wasn’t a surftech either. It was the real thing. It looked great but I don’t know about double over head on this one cause of the width. The measurements I posted I took of the the board I’m referring to.

Hey Dale,

The 10 footer sounds like one that would be good to save for small surf as a summer cruzer.

Rich,

Yes… I`m sure it was designed for best performance in clean and fast 2 to 6 foot waves. A sweet, simple shape.

Sorry Halcyon, just playing Spellcheckbot Troll. A dumb idea.

Hey Roy,

Why on this thread?

Good Surfin’, Rich

Halcyon,

I have no good reason for Spellcheck bot trolling on this thread other than an interesting spelling error opportunity and the last vestige of a grudge because you said I ‘live in a tunnel and it stinks’. I wouldn’t worry about it too much if I were you. It seemed funny at the time.

Hey Roy,

I’ll try to make things clear for you.

This thread is about Mark Martinson.

The idea on a design forum is to stay on task an keep personal issues out of the way.

If you haven’t figured it out yet I am trying to stay clear of you.

If you want to discuss personal issues or feel you have some score to settle. This isn’t where you do it.

I don’t have any personal issues to settle with you. I simply don’t want to have anything to do with you.

I’m working very hard on my self control. I appeal to your sense of propriety. You go your way and I’ll go mine. Please don’t push it because though I may get in trouble with Mike I will be on you like white on rice.

Rich

I hear you Rich, and I am interested in the boards you are discussing. Remember that a sense of humour is a wonderful thing! Oh, and do use the spell check bot from time to time!

Roy Stewart is an a*shole that touts pro-Al Qaeda propaganda overt at surfermag.com

Everyone there stays VERY clear of this New Zealand maggot. Go check out his posts for yourself over there and you’ll see what I mean.

Actually I have already apologised to Rich for my poor sense of humour. Actually you are mistaken regarding my political beliefs, as I believe both sides have gotten it wrong. I am against war, that’s all. I object to people posting pictures of atomic explosions on a surfing forum (as happened at surfermag.com) as a suggested solution to the world’s problems. I hope you like this Martinson bottom turn.

Hey Roy,

You did good. Great shot!

Thanks for enriching the thread.
