Saw they have ifoam as an option now. They basically say its bodyboard foam but it looks like they're selling it so you can make a board from it, Anyone tried/seen it?
What is it? Some form of EPS? No mention of what sort of foam it actually is from what I could see.
Haven't talked to Ty P, but from the info might be a blend.
Polystyrene & polyprop. Too bad all the stupid questions and
idiotic requests drove him off Sways... Characteristics of Polyprop blend:
Not too bad to mold, but trickier than plain poly.
Polyprop. by itself is a bitch to mold. Expands out of the mold
like a mother. Got to be cooled in a heated oven. (yeah, I know this
sounds stupid, but....) Polyprop. has rebound and non-compressability
that makes it great for shock absorbtion. don't know about bonding
with epoxy...... Maybe Greg has done some research.... this is old
school info, don't know if the material has changed much, don't think
so, boogie on!!!
Well ditto for vpravadas question then.
Jim Richardson has been using a blend of this foam for his surflight boards. My brother has one.
We talked to him several years ago about his boards. Jeff Johnston was working with Jim and he said he was hand shaping that foam. It wasn’t easy, but he had it all figured out. They bond a soft skin over the composite core.
Jim is the Hawaii rep for Marko blanks, so it makes sense that they are doing this kind of stuff. It probably fits what the Surflight guys need, and makes their production easier.
Those guys were way ahead of the pack using Marko blanks, but Jeff admitted that it was hard to get the pros to switch over even though the boards were super light. They were machine shaping Marko blanks 5 years ago.
