mask for epoxy vapor

Hello ! I m using the same mask for dust sanding and laminating epoxy ...probably wrong ,do you have any suggestion for a good mask at a good price available in ....lets say AMERICA. Thanks!

…hello,

what s exactly do you mean with America? which country? Canada, Costa Rica, Brazil, USA, Chile, etc?

ok, buy the 3M 7500 (is the silicone one) and the 6006 cartdriges (2) for the resin

and 7093 (2) or the 2097 (2) for the dust.

There s a cheaper cartdrige than the 6006 for the epoxies, I think the 6003, I don t remember right now, but I recommend to buy the 6006.

Also there are a cheaper mask (older) but is not comfortable like this one.

yeah I agree 100% the extra 10 bucks for the silicone 7500 series is well worth the comfort/fit

I am going to Japan to clean up Nuclear waste, they are paying $500 dollars a day ! Which mask is a good one for nuclear waste ? There is a good surfing spot not far from the plant, Will a wet suit protect me from the nuclear waste being pumped into the ocean ? Should I wear the mask while surfing ?  I will surf a long board , knee paddle and try not to fall off !! I will not eat any sea food or local vegies while there, I am takeing a back pack of MC Ds hamburgers. If I minimize my exposure I should be able to get in some good surf time !!! I don't expect any crowds !

…hello man,

no good mask at all for radiation

All this thing about nuclear plants, etc is somewhat new and the guys don t know a shit about it, and in my opinion they (so all of us are at the mercy of a few) are playing with fire.

All the stupid engineerings with all those ph d s etc and they don t know how to control anything.

We really do not need that.

I bet that all those surfers that surfed there (good waves in front and near the plan) until the earthquake, were exposed to some kind of radioactivity or nuclear waste in the water and air; they really don t know what will happend in the future with their lifes or with their genes…

Epoxy = High Solids = no VOC’s

k

Epoxy = High Solids = no VOC’s

k

…oh yeah?

I bet that you don t let a drum of epoxy opened in your children room

airframe is misinformed; while the resin has no voc’s the hardener side contains benzyl alcohol which is a voc, and xylene is 85% of “additive F”, which is another voc.

exactly and if its yellow and smells like cats piss its even worse

cheers huie

Epoxy =/= Epoxy

Depending on the epoxy, your children, my children, 9,999 of 10,000 children may be fine with a drum of epoxy in their rooms.

It would suck to be the 1 in 10,000 who has a reaction.

On the other hand, you might not want  any person - child or more importantly, a pregnant woman - near epoxy that has a high concentrations of methyl ethyl bad shit or other stuff in it.

The onus - anus? - of responsibility is on the user to do due diligence and not expose others or themselves to hazard and the only way to do that is to study, observe, use then analyze.

Go stand downwind right next to a rotting carcass of a washed up whale that suffered the ravages of old age - yes, it’s true, Japaneese fishermen and Navy SONAR don’t get them all - and you’ll figure out that nature produces plenty of environmental hazards for mankind.

You have to understand risk in all things not just in that which is made popular.  Unintended consequences brought about by ill-informed do gooders kill more people than industrial accidents.  It’s not popular to say but is nonetheless true because life exists on a knife edge.  To much concern for tomorrow kills you deader than dead today and vice versa.

Best way to not worry about dieing, dying, d’ing?  Don’t live.  Problem solved.

The wife and I used 3M epoxies in the 70’s and 80’s that were mildly bad to handle.  She developed sensitivity, me, not so much, some redness upon direct contact.  After personally switching to epoxies that are near 100% solids used in controlled, clean, well ventilated areas handled with nitrile glooves, nobody - self, wife, kids, students, neighbors - nobody had any issues.

No mask required.

On the other hand I still work with people that insist Epoxy == Epoxy, solar/wind and water are the answer and wait, hold it, scratch water, dams stop migration and tidal munches fish, oops, wind eats birds and causes noise pollution, Oh NOES, ever seen what’s involved in solar panel manufacturing?

Never mind.

There have been plenty of very good threads here on masks - recently.  Plenty of good threads on epoxy.

RTFMSDS for your epoxy product and use the appropriate handling methods in the recomended environment.

If you don’t know what a MSDS is, stop using the epoxy.  Now.  Don’t type anything else until you’ve put “MSDS epoxy” into a search engine and figured out what the results mean.

Your life and mileage will depend on it.

Once you learn what the MSDS for your product is you’ll know how to go about choosing the right mask - if any - to use.

Have a nice day.

Well put Brian -

While I miss evocation of childhood memories from the smell of Polyester, I prefer the peace of mind I’m not blowing mine with RR epoxy “fumes.”

…I tell ya what fella, you are acting the same way that those who think know all about the nuclear reactions, prevention methods, etc…and looks now…

The chemicals interaction in all types of things is very new in the mankind history so nobody knows all about it but live like yes they know it or try to believe that.

see transgenic food, etc

No, actually I’m acting like someone who understands that everything in life has a cost and the best you can possibly do is take the course at the time that provides most with the least damage.

There is always a cost, there is always someone looking to dodge and/or pass off the cost for profit or promotion of pet peeves, notions, ideologies, there is always damage.

DDT, malaria.

Electric cars, coal.

Chemistry, Bhopal.

Etc…

You have to do the best you can when you can and there is always a cost.

You can minimize the cost but there is always cost.

You can say you have an answer but there is always a cost.

You can bury your head and proclaim that a retreat to the past is the answer but there is always a cost but since we’ve covered that ground we pretend to know what that cost was while glossing over the horror that was.

I like the fact that chemistry and physics has seen the world-wide life-span increase from <35 to something much greater.

But we’re all going to die.

And I understand that cost very well.

BTW I m using west system,is it that bad(its the only one available near)

West … higher VOC’s, generally more toxic than surfboard epoxies, and yellows badly.
