Masking tape

What kind of tape do you use for masking pinlines. The blue 3m just wont make the turn at the nose and lay flat. thanks rick

3M #233…the narrower it is, the more it will stretch around the curves…be sure and pull it tight as you lay it down

Howzit rickp, One trick I use is to tear the tape down the middle to make it narrower, then you should be able to tape off the curved area. Only tear enough for the curved part. Other wise get some 1/4" stringer tape (233) and use it for the curved area and then after the curve blend the wider tape into the 1/4' tape and finsh the tape off. Aloha,Kokua

Have you tried wetting down the sprayed tape?I find that the lam dosent wet out properly if i dont. But then again you seem like youve made a few more than me.

All hail 3M #233, nothing else will do. But note, it’s available in narrow widths, like 1/2, 1/4, 1/8 inch. And it’s these narrower widths you gotta have to get around the outside of the curve. The inside of the curve will take the usual 3/4 size, which I use the most of.

Side note, not for pinstriping: tinted lams go off so fast with UV cure that you can use real cheap tape, save the 233 for where the appearance thing counts.

Howzit Callaway, Yes I probably have made a few more boards than you, somewhere’s around 2000-3000. But what do you mean by wetting the sprayed area or the lam won’t wet out properly. The thread is about getting tape to curve. The narrower the tape the easier it goes around curved areas, but when it comes to the straighter areas you want a thicker tape which won’t wander on you. the best way to insure the tape will adhere to the blank is tro vacumn the areas to be taped off.Aloha,Kokua

Howzit Honolulu, Have you tried the 233+ tape yet, It's a little thinner and stretchy and will do curves easier. I use the 1/2 inch for doing the nose area on long boards. For other uses the regular 233 is great. Fiberglass Hawaii had some other tape that worked well with resin but they only had it in 3/4 width and I like using 1" most of the time, if they could get the other tape in 1" i would add it to my materials.Aloha,Kokua
