matting footage

I like this one because it’s on “every day mushy surf”… looks so fun.

Mat Footage

By the way i looks to me that the “Honolua Man” is using the mat as a bodyboard, canting the mat a lot while traveling along the face, while Greenough seems to suit the mat to the wave’s shape being the mat really flat to the water and traveling faster… just my thoughts, but i know nothing about mat surfing.

Coque.

Surfmat/ surf mat needs leash.

anyone have any ideas about how to attach a secure leash in a way that minimally affects the performance of the mat?

Conceptually, I think I know the answer.

Leash will cause drag and definitely change performance for the worse unless its short and kept out of the water BUT if you use a leash it will stress the heck out of the mat and shorten its life. Just hang on tight. Quick hands, grip of steel and in a pinch, the Russian bear wrestler hug! “Leashes? We don’ need no stinkin’ leashes…” Esp in small waves. In bigger surf where harder to hang on, leash will do much more damage to the mat. So like those Japanese tea cups w/ no handle “too hot to hold; too hot to drink.” With mats “too big to hold onto; too big for matting” Or…“get a grip.” Actually, this is in one of several reasons I just made a plywood paipo. If surf is REALLY thumping, I get wood!

Actually this was a ‘think out of the box’ post and your definetly not thinking of the leash solution I’m thinking of!

C’mon guys , no one has been able to succesfully attach a leash to a mat so you rationalize that you dont need one…blechh and arrgghh!

Get to a higher level!

Surfmat / Surf mat needs leash!

In addition to many failures, I’ve successfully used a number of leash attachments/leashes on a variety of surf mats. Part of what I discovered was the best mats for surfing were not the best for hosting restraint systems.

In keeping with Murphy’s Law: surf mat restraints will fail at the point when they’re most needed!

A few options:

  1. No restraints

  2. Sea anchor

  3. Leash attached to mat

  4. Mat attached to rider

  5. Hand grips

  6. Extra weight

  7. Rapid deflation valve

The most experienced mat surfers in the world prefer unencumbered, high strength-to-weight equipment that approaches gossamer, with a very aggressive deck traction.

DrStrange said it well:

"So like those Japanese tea cups w/no handle, “too hot to hold, too hot to drink.” With mats: “too big to hold onto, too big for matting” Or… “get a grip.”

yea, and let’s make something that inflates it automatically too. I get tired trying to do that.

Ambrose nailed it (as usual). “Chhaaaaammm to meeee…”

As for inflation I find same as riding…the less you do the easier it gets. Tension makes you run out of breath and get light headed. Just breathe slow normal full breaths. Kinda like you were meditating pre go-out (now there’s an idea). And just aim your normal exhale into the bag. Really doens’t take any longer to fill and you can even do it while walking. Much harder to do while taking or singing though.

I give up,

You guys are right!

The mat will never have a leash system if none of you are creative enough ‘materially speaking’ to make one work.

Here is your bonus gift, a tethered flower.

would it help if I said I don’t like leashes on surfboards as well?

If you’re creative enough ‘materially speaking’ then why don’t you make the ultimate surfmat leash?

why would you need a leash for a mat??? if-per rare chance- you lose it, hell ya got swim fins on, so swim!

so you could ride it in OFFSHORE conditions and NOT lose your 300 $$$ inflatable investment…durr…c’mon this is a great idea you punkers…open minded enough to ride a mat, but spit and snarl at the idea of a leash???..what gives??..im with otis on this one…bicep leash =no drag and keeps it out of the way…=more matting less bodysurfing…lets evolve

S’nott the idea of a leash that’s the prob, its the idea of having a $300+ mat rip itself to death from the point load of a leash. Also, leash attachment likely to change handling characteristics…

Some things to consider:

1)You shouldn’t be out in OFFSHORE conditions if you have difficulty hanging on to your mat.

2)Mat surfing and bodysurfing are symbiotic, not counteractive. They have almost nothing in common with bodyboarding.

3)Many experienced watermen believe wearing a leash to avoid swimming and bodysurfing is devolution.

4)I’ve only heard of 3 or 4 mat surfers ever permanently loosing their equipment.

5)Do-it-yourself! There are a variety of inexpensive surf mats/inflatables available that have hand grips, ropes and/or accept leashes:
