Hi all, Just a quick question about time between laying the first and second deck layer of glass/resin?? I have some instructions and it says that you should not leave more than 24hrs between doing the first and second coat…just wondering if this is true/really important to stick to?? As this is my first board, and taking my time!! Many thanks - any advice very much appreciated! Neil
You don’t say which kind of resin. I’ll assume it’s polyester. Laminating resin stays gummy just about indefinitely. That means two things. You can still get a good bond between layers even if there’s a bit of time between the applications. However, the longer you wait to do the second layup, the more chance for contamination from dust, moisture, etc. If your work space is climate controlled and dust free, I’d say you could go more than 24 hrs. Otherwise, the sooner the better.
Well I don’t know what manual your’re reading from but if you are laying two layers of FB you do them together … same time… with Laminating Resin.
When the glass sets up [goes off]… top and bottom, do your filler coat or as the yanks persist in saying… your ‘hot coat’ … that is done using Filler resin. I presume we are talking about Poly-ester here so therefore the max time is decreed by how much MEK you put in the mix and how fast you can beat it’s time clock. There is no Max time other than the one you invent for yourself. Like google, MEK is your friend. OR at times, your worst enemy;)
Personally, if at all posable, I refuse to go anywhere near that shit anymore. there ARE alternative.
Cheers.
