My son and I (and a few friends) are going on our first surf trip to Hawaii, specifically Oahu. Can anyone give me any suggestions or information on things I might want to know when I get there? Food, best surf spot for an average/above average surfer, local surf etiquette, best place to visit, etc…( Most of us surf longboards but we do have a few shortboarders with us!) http://members.cox.net/austinsurfboards/
My son and I (and a few friends) are going on our first surf trip to Hawaii, specifically Oahu. Can anyone give me any suggestions or information on things I might want to know when I get there? Food — EAT THE LOCAL GRINDS, LOCO MOCO, PLATE LUNCH - STAY AWAY FROM TOURIST TRAPS ESPECIALLY IN WAIKIKI. best surf spot for an average/above average surfer, — THEY ARE ALL CROWDED, MOST WITH GOOD SURFERS, LOTS OF GOOD GUIDE BOOKS (GET ONE). local surf etiquette, – DON’T PADDLE OUT IN BIG GROUPS, DON’T HOG WAVES, DON’T BE A KOOK, DON’T WEAR A LEASH ON A LONGBOARD (UNLESS YOU HAVE TO, IN WHICH CASE YOU SHOULD BE ELSEWHERE), EXPECT TO BE HASSLED IF YOU ARE A HAOLE BUT JUST LET IT GO…SMILE AND ENJOY best place to visit, etc… – GET OUT OF TOWN, SEE THE ISLAND
Find an all Hawaiian radio station and keep it there. Go to the North shore. Go to the heiau above Waimea (bring some offerings/snacks (you’ll see!)). Eat malasadas every morning. Park at Tennis Courts early. Visit the West Side; go north of Makaha. Visit the Bishop museum. Eat at the shrimp trucks in Kahuku. Eat at Kua 'Aina in Haleiwa & get some shave ice. Have custom boardshorts made at the H-Miura Store in Haleiwa. Eat. Surf. Show respect. Have fun. Rob Olliges
