Maybe some of you consider bodyboard building as an off topic for this forum. I just wonder how of you could be interested about bodyboard building, using only HomeDepot-like materials.
I built custom order bodyboards for 3 years at the workshop of my flat and I’d like to share the few things I learnt trough this time.
Think about it: your own design at quite good quality for just 30€$ of investment. And quite easier than surfboard building…
Neira I would be stoked if you would post some construction walk thru photos. It’s funny, i was just searching the archives for this and couldn’t find what i needed. I am a shorebreak fanatic and want a GIANT body board for doing stand-up at sandys. I can get away with it on a 44, but want to make like a rediculously large 48 with rubber fins.
I used to have a big bruddah board that was like a 48 or 49 that i put stringers in by getting some golf club shafts red hot with a blowtorch and inserting them through the back of the board. Thing was awsome untill i bent one of the shafts inside the board and then it was stuck in the shape of a taco shell.
You should never feel like a post like this would be off topic, its more like the Swaylocks surfcraft design forum.
I’m interested as well as to see the construction of a custom bodyboard for around 30 bucks. are there any special tools that we need? I want to create a blackball beater for summer and I can’t justify spending almost $300 for a bodyboard. Anyways, I can’t wait to see your work through pics!
PLEASE! Do it! Sounds great! Just be good to make our own designs even if they are gutsliders. Battails, wings, channels the possibilities are endless.
I am interested also, it would be great to get the kids involved in making their own boards. They are currently making their own skim boards and I would like a black ball kneeboard.
Well, I’m happy because some many of you are interested about bodyboard building. The bad thing is I didn’t take pics when I built the bodyboards (2 per month x 12 months per year x 3 years = 72 bodyboards, ummm quite good number).
Since I decided to give a try to longboarding (2 years ago) I’ve never surfed a bodyboard again, but, to be honest, some days, when surf is quite strong I miss having a bodyboard and a pair of fins in the car. So I think these PICS should be a good excuse for building a new bodyboard for me.
I think it’s better to start a new post at this forum. See you there.
You can also search on google for “neirabodyboards”, I think my old website is still running (sorry, in Spanish).

geez mate …I always enjoy your posts …you’re like the Mr. Magoo of the surfing world !! …cheers for making my day mate !! [It’s lucky I don’t drink around my keyboard …I reckon I would have drowned three or four of them by now , spraying liquid from laughing so much !! [er …out my MOUTH , I mean . That just sounded wrong as I wrote it , is all] ben
I’m interested too. I can build’em and sell’em in my surfshop. Even basic bodyboards are too expensive here in Mexico, and if I pay shipping, one bodyboard get more expensive than 30 dlls.
Neira el trabajo que estas haciendo se ve formidable, podrias mandarme un mensaje privado para conocer los nombres de los materiales en español? El home depot aqui donde vivo esta lleno de incompetentes que no tienen idea de lo que venden.
I can’t take the glory of the idea. I learned the golf club trick from my friend Kepa who is a professional body boarder. A.D.D. is good for one thing and that is the constant feeling that your equipment needs to change and you have to ride something new.
XPS and non-solvent contact cement should be available at HomeDepot-like stores.
1mm plastic sheets (PVC. PSHI,…) can be purchased from local neon labels (don’t know how you call these, the panel you put on top of your surf shop).
5mm EVA foam is the hardes material to find. Some PC mouse pads are built from EVA. Try to buy 2 EVA camping mats (50cm wide, we need 60cm, shit!) at a local shop.
PLEASE: jump to “home Depot bodyboard building” thread. It’s very difficult to keep 2 posts alive.
