McKee Quad Measurements

So I was looking at McKee’s charts and I just need a quick clarification, are his measurements to the trailing edge of the fins OR are they measured to the base of the fins? Just need clarification before I go drilling some holes.

im not sold on the mkee formulae myself. i think a quad setup should try an emulate a keel setup ie. on the rail with less cant and toe in and fuller foils. i tried a few mckee type setups and feel they lack drive. a keel fish has way more drive but obviously not as loose. if you bring the trailers to center your more in thruster territory anyway . . the ideal would be to keep the drive of keels and loosen it up a twitch

Hi W1978

The data is all for the trailing edge of each fin - where you would normally mark the first dots on a board to set the fins.
I’m all over this setup - been using it for a few years to great effect - and had amazing feedback from the guys who I make boards for.

However, I dont use it exclusively - like Paul mentions above there is another train of thought on quad placements. - I use them out on the rail and close spaced where I am trying to get a keel like feel to a board - I do this on boards that would be traditionally setup using keels but where I’ve chosen a ‘split keel’ quad fin like the pavel speed dialer or the Futures Controllers.

On all ‘shortboard’ or hybrid boards I make with quads I use the mackee data. On most of these I will include the fifth plug to allow the rider the option to setup as a thruster.

My advice on which setup to go for would be based entirely on the kind of board youre making and what you want it to do.

THIRDSHADE The board I am making is a roundnose fish type board with rail bumps to taper to a swallow tail. I am copying a board that I had but I made it a little wide and thicker this time.
