Personally, I’m perfectly happy doing just that with ProBox and my fin selection, but then I might be a little biased as I designed the system!
Hey Deano - Thanks for jumpin’ in. I have mentioned, on several occasions, that I think your system would be the way I’d like to go in the future. I was looking at you site again, and I didn’t see anything about adjusting “side to side,” i.e., further/closer to the rail.
Also, I’m curious about the statement about the “break away” feature - “without damaging either the embedded box or fin.” Just curious about damage to the fin… I just had a couple ripped out of a board when my leash broke and the board got washed onto the rock reef. Pretty sure, I’d not find those fins with any type of ease any time soon. Wondering if you guys “find” you can find your fins pretty easy?
I do love the fact you have a 10 degree cant insert. Makes it high on my list of considerations.
hi Robin,
maybe i am a little biased too,
as i too, also designed 4ways!!!
all the best!

Deano
Hi TaylorO,
thanx for your questions.
to answer the "offset" movements in or out from rail, these have been designed for years, but never released previously.
now that there is a "calling" for these, we will be releasing these early January 2010.
this will also be the time we release our next generation 4ways box that will be under the glass (ie: like futures/fusion)
this will provide the strongest adjustable box system on the planet!
as for the break-points. they are designed to break under forward impact, but as u know the angle of the impact will determine the efficiency of the break.
fo us the most important thing is, that it is in the inter-disc to give that benefit when u need it.
we have had many cases where surfers have fallen on their fins and the break-away feature "saved" them from being sliced and having stiches.... etc etc..
the "find your fin " option is not yet available, but i dare not say "never" , u just never know....
as for the extra degree discs, we are planning on releasing the 2 deg disc and the 6 deg in the very near future...
this will give u options from 6 -8 -10- 12 deg splay or the reverse, 4 - 2- 0 as well when used the angled inter-discs the other way around.
best regards
Deano
With thickness you also have to take into consideration the impact it will have on flex if that is something you care about. With most of my designs I care a lot about flex so I tend to steer away from to much thickness.
I just put the modern keels ( probox ) into a twinny style board, and the flex feels great. Gunna test tomorrow morning in ( if the forecast is right!! ) small offshore waves. Can't freakin wait to try em, they look sweeet!!.
Thanks for replys you guys -
Deano - I guess it makes sense about the fins coming out and still being usable… If you fell on the board/dropped it on the rocks, etc. then you could pick up your fin(s), and broken insert, put on a new insert, and take it from there. Cool
hey guys, any more thoughts on rail finned quad shortboards? i've got a HP quad that i plan on adding a couple extra boxes to. the new boxes will take the board from a McKee-ish setup to a tighter cluster. the front of the rear Proboxes will be about 1" from the back of the front boxes. i'm looking to get the benefit of the fins working together and i like the idea of the split keel that Robin mentions. any suggestions on fin templates? i've got the Guy Takayama quads (pic1) which i really like in the McKee-ish placement. i've also got a set of the spit-quads (pics 2 and 3)... i'm wondering if there is another set that you guys recommend? i'm thinking maybe a Belik set (pics 4 and 5) or the HFquad set (pic 6) or the Quadfire set (pic 7) or???
Hey Chris - If it’s not to late, put the boxes in so you can get a spread between the back of the front fins, and the front of the back fins (Fore and aft spread.) so you can go from @ 7/8" (Minimum) to the biggest spread you can get w/those boxes - if it’s @ 1/2", then you’ll be set pretty optimal, as it seems once the spread goes to 1/2"+ it looses the full impact of the interaction between the fins.
All of that is advice I got from Robin, and it is working well for me… But as I wrote on some other thread - I wouldn’t be in love w/my quads if I couldn’t have figured out the asymmetrical set up which works for me.
Good luck - and if doesn’t make any difference to you, could you post your pics w/Tiny pic, as the server I use blocks “photo bucket???” I know, beggar, chooser… Ha!
Edit: okay, i tried it again... here you go Taylor:
GTquad:
quadfires:
Beliks:
HFquad:
spitquad:
did that come through for you? 'cause all i see are red x's
No go from here Chris… Who knows… Maybe they’ve blocked “tinypic.com” as well…
Well - seems tinypic is working…
did you use the "tree" icon to post that pic Taylor or did you just drop the HTML in the body of your post?
Chris, after getting a custom shaped modern fishy design with the Mckee setup, i have found that im more suited to the rail finned quad setups. I have a homemade twinny that i've added more boxes to, that is very much a rail finned quad with not much distance between front and back fins. I surf it much more naturally than the Mckee quad. I love my Mckee quad board, and it surfs great, although my fin setup on it is big big fins in the front, and tiny one tab fins in the uppermost fear fin box. Surfs more liek a twinny then, but im used to that so it works great that way.
An old pic before i'd sanded the boxes!
Hey Chris - I use the tree icon, then put the html in the box - The pic I did above was off there page, and was that small. I guess you gotta set up the size yourself to get the best fit.
I’m trying the “file attachments” from below… some times it’s worked for me, and others not… It does the “best fit” though -when it works.
