Hi JR, The nose width sounds fine but I think you’re at least and inch too narrow at the mid point 21.5-22.0" is more like it for a beginner. It’ll be much easier to learn on. Tail width is ok but you could go a wide as 15.5" I’ve got an 8’0"x17"x21.25"x15.5"x3" rounded pin 4.25" nose rocker, 2" tail rocker. It’s a rocket in steep surf. I’d go with around an inch or so more tail rocker to make it turn more easily and definitly put future or red x rail fin boxes and a standard central fin box in it. keep the bottom flat with a little vee in the tail and the rail soft of front and harden them through the mid section to sharp at the tail. You may find your self wanting to ride it too. It’s a great versitile length. A board like this with a moderately strong glass job will catch waves very easily and last a long time if you take care of it. Let me know what you decide to do. Gone Surfin’, Rich

thanks Rich. well i was thinking narrow to allow her to carry it but screw that, my wife has always had to carry her boards on her head. anyway, I drew up an outline with those measurments and it looked far to narrow. then drew up 17 x 21.5 x 15 with a 5" rounded square and it looks very nice (kinda eggy). Matter of fact first thing outta my mouth was “might have to keep this one for myself”. do you think 15.5 on the tail would be better?

If you’re gonna go with a squash tail like you mentioned above 15" is plenty of width. I personally prefer a rounded pin and the extra half an inch will give you a little more drive and lift and make the board easier to turn. It’ll also be a better board as far as I’m concerned but there are lots of folks out there that swear by their squash tails. It is the the most popular shape for a board this size and who am I to argue with tradition. I wouldn’t trade my Speed Platter for any 8’0" with a squash tail anywhere. The thing rips no matter how I fin it. Keep playing around with the lines. The board will weigh less than 15lbs when you done so it’ll be easy to carry. Mine’s got two layers of 4oz on the bottom and 4-6 on the top with a water drop fabric inlay on the nose. It’s amazingly light. The board accelerates faster than anything else I have off the lip. Some boards are just magic. Gone Surfin’, Rich

I always have to adjust my paddling stroke when switching to a minimal/longboard(elbows out or else my arms bump into the rails). I feel like it reduses my power of my paddling. just my $.02 regards, Håvard
