i’ve got an old 6’3" swallow tail and ive got the idea of putting a longboard centre fin box in it, maybe moving the side fins and possibly adding some small wings to the tail of the board and pulling the tail in .
anybody done anything like this ? or any advice on how to go about this ?
cool. i got the board just lying around so i think ill just go at that , plus ive only got basic tools which would way too much time to shape a board from scratch.
Personally I would not start cutting into the blank and adding wings, however if you don’t mind experimenting with an board you have already, I would grind down a 8" box not a full size box (you can grind them down a bit if you have a foiled out tail), then remove your sides. Once that is in try it as a single, then put in some sides, which you might have to put up at somehwere about 13" mark.
Cheers

Does the board currently have Glass-on fins? If so save the cut off fins for future projects…
The standard longboard center fin boxes are one inch thick. So you need a little more than one inch thickness where you want to put the box. Yes, I have modified boxes for thin tails like Basswave says…You can make a home made caliper out of scrap wood or even cardboard. Search the general discussion for instructions on installing the box. I use a router with one of those bits that has a bearing on it. I made a jig from instructions I found on Swaylock’s.
As far as modifying the tail…yes it can be done but you are going to have your hands full with the box install so I recommend one small project at a time.
