MERMAID LONGBOARD - What's your rating?

Hey all,

My wife painted my freshly glassed 9’-0" and she’s looking for some feedback. She wants to take it back from me and enter it into an art competition. Please let us know what you think and what you think the board should be worth. Any feedback is much appreciated. Thanks!

I think her artwork is original and stunningly beautiful. Help her follow her dream and have her enter it her competition. What it’s worth? Priceless.

Wow. Nice work.

The Surfer’s Path had a recent article on art boards done for a fundraiser, done by pros.

The Mermaid is as good as anything on view there.

I can’t help with a dollar value estimation, though, sorry.

Much, much better than a lot of “fashionable” arty surfboards I have seen recently… Go for it.

Looks great.

Should it be under a coat of resin?

nice… she has done well…My wife has artistic talents too and has been talking about doin some stuff on my boards…my 10 yr. old son does a few too, he just did a spray on a shape I did for Tom Carroll…he was fairly proud of that one…

you should put it in the art show for sure and get her to do more…can be hard to part with special boards when your family have had something to do with it, I recently sold a fish my son and I shaped and sprayed together and still feel like maybe I should have kept it…money doesnt always matter…

Hey Surferdad,

The value of such a piece depends on the context it is put in…

As at times both an exhibiting Fine Artist and a surfboard manufacturer I have found the difference startling:-

In a high-brow art gallery with the right artists’ name, a painted board becomes an artwork. If its somebody famous, the sky is the limit on price…

If its an unknown artist, its a matter or whether the piece appeals to the tastes of a well-heeled patron who may or may not also be a surfer. In that case the asking price is similar to the market value for an equivalent sized piece by such a budding artist.

If its a custom board for a client, in a typical board-sales context, either retail or factory-direct, the price is never more than an hourly rate defined by the degree of difficulty of the work.

Its incredibly difficult get a custom board client to pay much more than the going rate for a “Spray”…and if it makes the difference to having or not having a board, the customer often opts for plain.

In the context of the second-hand board rack, an artwork is often a liability making it harder to sell. Sprays are most often fairly neutral in order to appeal to a wide range of tastes…

All that said, there is ,many a classy, timeless sprayed board which is the pride and joy of an owner long after they have updated to a new and different-performing board. Your wife is bound to find a great sense of satisfaction in giving select people enjoyment through her work.

Thank-you very much for your feedback!

Thank-you to everyone who gave us your comments. I just finished glossing with Mirror Finish Epoxy and better get out there to pull the tape. Should be about gel time now. My wife will be entering the contest after all and it looks like I’ll have to shape yet another if I want to get it in the water. She also wants me to make more so that she can keep on painting on these fine fiberglass canvases. We’ll keep posting the art.

Thanks again to all who offered feedback!

Well, I may be aiding the competition, but check out the thread “Call for surf art.” It’s for a surf art exhibit in Palos Verdes. There are a few well heeled surfers in PV (Southern California). You wife’s board looks great.

Price? As an furniture maker I worked for told me, “Whatever the market will bear.” For an unknown artist you kind of price it as low as possible, the lowest you’re willing to accept. If it sells the inch the price up. If it doesn’t sell then you need to find a new market or adjust your expectations or better your technique.

I’m trying to finish an “art” board and just f…cked up the gloss coat. I may not make the dealine for entries

Beautiful art work , enter it in the show .

+1 to this…

I like it a lot more then most other material I see…

Good Luck You too well do well in the competition.
