"metallic appearance fins "

For my next fin panel , I’m wanting to lay up 10 or so layers 5oz [clear], then for the next two or more [? 5?] layers, spraypaint gunmetal / metallic finish, then laminate another 10 or so layers of 5oz [clear] on top of that.

Q’s…

anyone done similar ?

any problems with colour run / intensity ?

any problem with cloth and lam resin adhering to spraypainted cloth ?

anyone out there got photos of this type of experiment ?

cheers !

p.s. - I realise fcs have similar kinds of finishes …I wanted to create my own differing sized templates in a metallicy [?word?] looking fin ish …

Of course , an alternative would be spraying foam cores, and glassing . But I just wondered if people had any success with doing it this way , first …

Hi Chip.I’ve used gold leaf powder for guilding(?) of picture frames in marlin

lures I made of casting resin. They have silver as well.Too metallic for what I

wanted but sounds like what your after.Very fine and a small amount mixed

into a cup of resin made it look like a gold ingot.I got it at an art store.

www.fiberglast.com they an aluminized fiberglass cloth, i would also say a can of rustoleum I looked it up on another thread…

"I use a spray can - Painters Touch by Rustoleum!

A fastidiously prep’d surface is key. Then I heat

the can in warm water and spray thick until it

flows and keep moving across the board making

sure I don’t have any dusted areas. I use a down

draft table so I don’t get over spray. Usually

takes two coats to get a clean finish.

I also bake the paint in an oven at 130 deg F. for

at least 3-4 hours. Also helps cure the epoxy

laminate. I’ve used this paint on Kiteboards for

a couple of years and it has held up great. Easy

to touch-up and I can get lots of colors. Home Depot

has it.

Hey Ben,

I tried lamming in some aluminum foil but it is coated with something to keep it from oxidizing. It might work if you scuff it up with some scotch-brite first.

like nice fishing lures on the bottom of your board.

There are a number of companies that make aluminium, silver and copper tissues used for giving composites specific electrical properties. I’ve got a card lying around from last years JEC, if I find the contact I’ll post it, but a tissue might be an easier way to go?

thanks , guys, for all the alternative suggestions …worth keeping in mind for future experimenting , for sure !! But I’m still wondering if there is anyone out there in “forum land” who has done the spraypaint lam fin panel option I mentioned at the start of this thread…

I’d be interested to hear from you , before I bite the bullet on at least 30 layers of cloth and resin coverage to go with that .

…cheers !

This might be of some interest:

I was thinking of using for a metallic-look board. I’ve been told that it doesn’t add too much weight.
