Im looking for another alternative than my longboard, something probably 7’6 -8’. Something that moves like a shortboard and floats like a longboard… Im not a fan of hard to paddle/low wave count short boards. I was thinking a Infinity secret weapon which is 22.5 wide and a whoping 3.75 thick or a Greek shorty which at 7’6 is 24" wide and about 3 3/8 thick. Anyone have any experience with one of these? or any suggestions? thanks
found a 7’6 x 22 5/8 x 3 1/4 KG orca quad fish for a great price that i think im gonna give a go. has the float that i want and i hear good things about quads
I think you should be less worried about length and float and more worried about what you’re trying to accomplish on a wave. There’s a lot more to surfing than wave count.
BTW, a KG orca quad could be a good board for you if you’re willing/able to adapt to the way it surfs, but that’s the thing - you probably will have to adapt.
are you surfing anywhere that requires you to duck dive in the slightest, or do you weigh 275#…? Cause you’re talking about a huge amount of volume floation with either shape…
I weigh 185, and one of my favorites in the quiver is an 8’0 x 17.5 x 21 3/4 x 13 3/4 x 3 single to double squash tail mini-mal w/ tapered foil that paddles and catches waves like a longboard, I can reasonably duck dive, and more important, is a blast to surf…
I currently ride a 9’6 Pig that Terry Martin shaped me recently also a 9’6 walden magic model for a bit more performance when there’s a bit more action in the surf. having these 2 being my quiver i like/and am used to float, im just looking for a 7’-8 single fin or something a bit more shortboardish, i weigh 190lbs,
Check Mair Surfboards, or the threads here that have Robin Mair in them. Robin is making a egg shape that looks really nice. There’s a thread on Sways that has photos of one he made. His Swaylocks name is hand-shaper.
Robin’s boards are quads, but I really think it would be worth checking out. I ride a lot of 8’ single fin eggs I’ve made for myself, but I’m going to be trying Robin’s quad fin setup on some of my boards.
I looked at the Infinity, but it was way too much volume. Something about 21 to 22" wide and about 3" thick would be plenty big. You could go a little thicker and then taper off the deck to get to really nice thin rails.
