Folk’s- I met Lowel /McDing today for the first time! Real cool guy. He turned me on this 6’10" blank, and I also bought a roll of cloth and a Fish blank!
Anyway, I need some feedback as to my crazy idea. Blank is 20" wide and I wanted to go as wide as possible - which will be 19 3/4" wide dead center. I then took my nose up as wide as possible at 17 1/2", I made my tail 17" x 12" wide tail block. I drew her up and I’ll saw off 5" off back and whatever off nose end… man, I dunno?! Looks funky but cool! Oh, length will be 6’ even!
Might have to a little re-foiling as my apex of rocker is roughly 4-6" forward center. I could plane back further behind center 1 1/2" or so… what do you think!? Should I start mowing foam!?
Project#2 is a 23" wide 5’6" mini simmons. Gonna build two.
Shapa, that’s pretty narrow for a mini.
Why don’t you just widen that blank?
Cout stringer, then add somefoam and replace stringer.
2" would make it a lot more versitile.
Barry - ty for your ideas! How could
I get enough foam to widen the blank? Too bad you didn’t have a shapin rm out near santa cruz! Lol. Of I’d swing by and buy some foam off you !
fill me in on wth you would do to widen it…
The only other option I can think of is to -just build it, surf it, and see how it works!? Or shape a semi gun in a rp design, or do a thumb tail? I dunno, I just had a screw driver ( Smirnoff malt beverage) and have this crazy idea! Lol. Well, I havent shaped mowed anything yet, so I can do something different. My other idea is to do a thumb tail psb? I dunno?! I can mow off a few layers and do a shortboard if this thing looks too funky!
Shapa, you need a “donor” blank.
I keep 'em just for this application.
If you were closer, I’d do it for ya.
Two 1" wide strips would do the trick.
Well, I got the other fish blank! If I build a 22.5" wide sims, well, I might be able to squeeze a 1" strip I can glue in the rails. But would it look shitty? Are you talking about cutting out the stringer and adding foam in the middle? Cant I glue some on the side rails? Ty for the tips!
FInd a local shaper who handshapes longboards.
Rail cuts are great for that,
Update: I moved sum templates around and I now know I have to make a new nose half. Nose will be pulled in to 14", and I will pull the tail block area down to 11". But tail width keep n at 17" .big wide pulled simonesque thumb tail. I’ll plane to rough thickness, I’ll draw her up and see how the curves flow. 6’ x 19 3/4" mid-slimmons!
dang! I just missed your post. Only prob is I don’t have wheels. My new idea is to pull the nose and draw in the tail by hand to make it curvier - just out the mark…but I’ll prob be forced to refoil. I just discovered my apex of rocker is 4-6" forward center. I want my apex behind center 1 1/2" gonna have to fire up my skil 100! Ty for the heads up.
Folk’s - I couldn’t resist! So I jumped the gun and drew it up w new design. Then I just rough sawed it out in linear segments as my blanks sort of narrow. Dims: 15" nose x 19 3/4 6’ long 16 1/2" tail w 11" tail block. Wp dead center. Will have to refoil to pull the apex behind center. It’ll take some carefull planing etc…
Note: this is just starting! I think I will add a little curve near the tail block and upboard a bit, but not much… tail will narrow a bit…Nose tip will also be rounded off for safety.
Rails
Prob a moderate tuck, and I will also tuck under the edges most of the flats…things might change a bit. But this is my basic design. I honestly think it’s good considering I only have 20" of width at wp. Anyone like it?
About board: tail half is a lb design -so a parallel outline w str8 r curves… nose is from my fish template, but I pulled in more… the tail is not done.
Shapa,
Yes foam is added at the center.
From the looks of that, it looks like a “I ran outta foam” outline.
Only way to put back some curve back into that outline is narrow the nose and tail.
Front half looks good.
Little straight from wide point back.
It takes a wide blank to make a Mini-simms.
5’ 10" RP. 6’ 2"A, 6’ 5"A and so on.
This is not a mini simmons though.I Just took a little from a mini and put it up on rear half…the idea is to increase small wave float + increase speed w a straight r outline… I am using my fish templates nose, and using a lb rear half… I wanted it straighter to hopefully develop speed. Might pull
The tail a bit more? I won’t know until I finish planing to outline. It’s a new design I made up.
The concept: sims rear half to develop speed, fish front half to free up from catching rail, wp at center for pivoty turns…
Might pull in tail a bit?wont know until I finish my outline planing etc… I want it pretty str8 in middle…But if I pull my tail in more it should help in turns, right?THANKS - I might add more curve in the rear half? But it would prob be 16 1/4" in tail.I’ll cut it out first.
BARRY - the mini simmons I’ll do on my other blank. Its 25" wide x 6’2". It’s gonna be 5’4" 22 1/2" wide.
Look closely at pics - I have yet to finish sanding to plan shape lines… ill do that and if it looks too straight I can re template it a tad?
Actually, I just took my str8 edge to align at center at its a bit too str8… on quik inspection, well, I could narrow my tail width to 16 " or so - which will give it more curve at center. I’ll have to plane bottom out and retemplate the rear… thanks for noticing that!
Tail block will be a little narrow r also… prob be about 10+?
Update: I pulled the tail width to 16" it gave it a bit more curves out tail. But it’s still kinda straight at center. But there’s a curve! Tail block is now 9 1/2" prob more curve at rear at tail block. This pencil stinks! I’ll plane the entire bottom and template the whole thing! But the tail end - by the block looks better! I just dont want it too narrow at tail block. I want it atleast 9". Pref 9 1/2" where it’s at. It’s a bit str8, but there’s curve. It’s not dead straight.
