How do you replace your milled fiberglass for FCS plug installations? Do you cut up 4 oz. cloth manually? If you buy it where do you get it from? Thanks, Magoo
I just spoke to Brent at Fiberglass Florida. They sell milled fiberglass for $3.50 a pound. I believe that the smallest container is One gallon (8 lbs.), it might be a bit much for what you want, but it is available. I am thinking about doing the milled glass in a hot coat, like shine was talking about. Sounds like a good idea, but I’m not sure of the weight factor. They do ship (not sure where you are). They have got all kinds of stuff and they are super cool. I called them when I first started out, when I was not even 100% sure as to what I needed to glass my first board, and they were very forthcoming with any info I wanted. They are in rockledge, fl. I can post the number if you want. I have used cabosil in place of milled glass when I am in a pinch.

Please post the number, I’m in SoCal so I’ll have them UPS it. I think that cabosil is not a good fit for the fin plugs because it doesn’t add strength (at least that is what I’ve found in my research). Anyone care to comment on that (Herb, Jim, Tom@Daum?) Magoo
Hey Magoo, if I remember correctly Fiberglass Hawaii in Santa Cruz carried Milled fiberglass. Closer than Florida, but I’m surprised you can’t find it in Socal? Seems like cutting up leftover glass is the easiest and most economical though- ryan
I feel the same way Magoo. The milled glass adds a structural quality that I don’t think Cabosil or any other filler can match. (Noodle! what’s up with diatomaceous earth for this?) It does add weight but in my limited experience fixing failed FCS plugs, none of the ones I’ve used chopped cloth in have failed. Herb’s idea of shaving off a scrap fin blank is a good idea, scissor cutting scrap will work but you have to cut it really fine so you still maintain the flow properties of the resin. I’ve been buying from Surf Source in Fla. but they were out of stock on the milled cloth last order. I noticed that my local Silmar dist. also services the boating industry with some grade of chopped cloth that they bulk up their sprayed mold layups with. TS>>> Thanks for the follow-up Mike! Instead of milled fiberglass how about just cutting your E-glass into fine pieces. I used milled fiberglass to fix a board and do not like the gray tint. E-glass will be clearer. For a supply of milled fiberglass check out Fiberglass Supply at www.fiberglasssupply.com You can get half pound $1.93 and one pound $2.70 quanities cheaper than the freight probably.>>> How do you replace your milled fiberglass for FCS plug installations? 321-639-3046 fiberglass florida. I don’t know how economical it would be with shipping added, but it does not hurt to ask.
