On bigger waves, you DON’T stand with your backfoot right on the tail, so tail width is usually not a problem.
I’m size 11, and had plenty of semiguns with tails around 10.5", and never had problems. Mostly used flat decks back there to keep my backfoot out of the water, crowned decks don’t do the job, as waterflow over the rails can start to lift your toes on frontside bottom turns.
Current 8’er has a 13" tail, which is really wide for bigger, faster waves for my lightweight 150lbs. Wish it was closer to 12".
Backfoot when BigWed ( 7-10’ ) sizing is usually placed about 20" from the tip of the tail, so it’s well forwards of 12" mark, and the board is a lot wider.
Don’t forget to spread the cluster of your fins wider, to accomadate a bigger turning sweetspot. That allows your turns from farther forwards on semi and bigger guns.
