Mini Longboard Fin Question

I’ve been borrowing an 8’6 x 21.5 x 2-5/8 high performance longboard with a 2+1 fin set up and plenty of rocker and a double concave bottom. I am 5’7 and 150 pounds. What kind and size of center fin would you recommend if the board was mostly ridden in beach breaks and the intent was to keep it as loose as possible? Thanks for the input.

6 inch cutaway.

I second that…

What shape tail and how wide is it?

I’m 6’1" and 180lbs. I rode a Becker 8’6" with similar dimensions for several years. It had a 2 + 1 setup on a pintail. I used an 8.5" cutaway fin on average days and the 9.5" when it got big. I loved that board, wish I never sold it!

Hey MACSD,

I think that you can get what you want out of a set-up that’s sized well and be able to surf bigger waves and small ones just by tuning the set-up. Much depends on of you want a center fin dominant or rail fin dominat feel. A more powerful center fin holds in the soup better but amped up rail fins make the board skatey and that’s what some guys like.

The attached set-up (7" center and 4.125" rails) is probably pretty close to what you want but tail width, rocker ~ ect and board specks really dictate how big the fins need to be and where they should be located.

6" rainbow rake or FCS (but bahne box) ‘soul arch’. Go to 7" if its shoulder or bigger.

Rich,

Those are BEAUTIFUL fins!!!
