Hi, I just finished my first board, a mini longboard shaped from an 8’3E. Its for my daughter, 4’11" high and around 85 lbs. Anyway, I had a major disaster on the first lamination, laps dried hard before I finished them, and ended up pulling off the glass just in time and reshaping. The end result is a board about 7’10" tall and a little over 20" wide at the widest point. Is this too narrow for a novice surfer of her size? Don’t want to discourage her when trying to surf it. We have plenty of other boards so if it doesn’t work shes not stuck with it, just wondering what to expect.
Swaylocks has been invaluable, I wouldn’t have attempted this without this site.
Still have to add the fin box and wait for some waves!
Hey, thanks for the opinions, I feel better. This forum’s great!
Yea, we figured that one good thing about the disaster is that she can now fit the board under her arm, a first for her.
I was using suncure resin, reccommended by many for a first timer. I had the garage door partially closed to shade the board, or so I thought. The garage floor however is slightly white and the UV rays apparently reflected upwards cooking my laps while I messed around with the top. I realized at the last moment that this would be a mess to clean up and managed to peel the fiberglass off the board. It took chucks of the rail with it however and thats how I ended up with the narrow board.
