fins double foiled at 11" x 4"
comments ??
I have built 7 or 8 of these Simmons inspired boards and found, for me, that a fin template closer to a fish works better than the small D type fins.
You might want to rethink those and look at what Source is using.
My orange Simmons looking board has those Source fins and it seems to have much more drive and hold than the D fins or half moons I had been using.
Nice shape to yours though, looks great, the dims are close to my 6’0" but an inch wider in the tail. My orange board flies!
I have the half-moons. What I find is they have plently of hold while driving down the line and in committed bottom turns. But they wash out completely during slower top turns and they don't engage on the drop right away either. Mine are 9" x 4" .
thanks for the input. It’s my 1st try at a mini-simmons type though, so I think I will stick to the little half moons so I can feel what the difference is when I shape the next one.
A few more details : the bottom is shaped as a hull, with a tri-plane going through the board until the middle point. It then blends into a quite deep concave (1/2" deep at the tail), with two narrow flat zones at the end to hold the fins. It gives a catamaran look while looking at it on certain angles because the belly keeps going until the tail around the concave.
Rocker is around 3"1/2 - 4" on the nose, no more then 1" at the tail.
Rails are very thin and foiled, also as a stubby, with 50/50 in the middle and sharpening a lot on the last foot of the board.
The S-deck is there to keep the volume down on the nose and theoretically enhance speed while surfing on the forward half of the board (which should be quite often given the small size).
It’s at the glass shop right now, I’ll post some finished photos when I have a chance.
I didn’t have any half moons when I made mine so I just stuck some G4’s in there. Sure doesn’t look right but they are really fun. On steep waves you slide down the face and then they engage. Also fun to try little 360’s on the whitewater with them. I think I’m just going to stick with them cause if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
Ok
I don’t know a lot but it seems to me that the sims have this wierd straight bit of rail line in the template at sort of hip point. If you look at RK riding the max vesion recently at some huge waves in california, when he hits his bottom turn (backside, true) the boad seems to be turning on the straight bit of rail behind the hip point. I know the board is huge, but if you go mini sims without the straight bit after the hip I reckon you end up with a very squirrely less positive ride. BUT i could be wrong. After all I havent made one YET.
What do you think??? But may be next. Just for context i ride quad fish and logs.
need help figuring what size mini-simmons i need? would a 5’9" be big enough for me 53 years old and 180 lbs
hi, mine is a Joe Bauguess at 5'8" x 23 x 3 and works great. I'm 5'11" ant 180. 52. I also surf 3-4 times per week. HTH
finally got back from glassing
I can’t wait to surf it !
it looks like I took off just a little too much volume in the center point (I would 've liked the s-deck to be shorter), but I guess I’ll have to wait and surf before I draw any conclusion …
Flong,
I think your board is outstanding! Also, I think your couch may have been in my living room 25 years ago. I won’t mention what’s been done on it. Mike
lol
thanks !
Nice Shape! Looks heaps of fun. Seems real parallel. What happens with a more continuous curve on the rails?
