Here’s a thought about rounding the “butt-crack:” Make it nice and round, like a 1/4" radius, so the glass wraps nice and easy, then you can add a nice sharp edge with a resin and glass bead putty, post lam - pre sand/finish coat, or build up resin and glass if you want to keep it clear.
Updates:
Have successfully laminated 2.5 out of 4 boards
The fish underwent major construction/Buttcrack expansion surgery and nose job. Thank you for making me go back. It looks so much better. I basically extended the curve in the stringer too the bottom of the board and then just matched that angle on the rest of the tail. ill send pics before I laminate that board
Question for today:
- For the hot coat can I use regular epoxy? It is a bitch to sand. Any way around buying a new product?
In epoxy we would more commonly call it a fill coat and there are several ways to do that.
For sanding, you want to get the epoxy to set up hard. “Post Curing” the glass job will help the epoxy cure further and further optimize the strength and hardness factors of the resin. There are various ways to do that. One builder I know just sticks the board in his rafters for a couple weeks in the summer and allows the heat/cool cycles to accomplish that. Some appraisers stick their boards into a hot car all day. Others put the board under tarp out in the sun. And others build an oven to do their post curing (that’s the one that will yield the most consistent results).
That harder the resin sets up the easier it is to sand.
