Mixing volan and E glass

I was wondering if using 7.5 oz. volan and 4 or 6 oz. E glass together works well, and/or, if there are any problems in doing so. Will the greenish tint of the volan still show through? Anything else to consider? Thanks- ryan

what exactly is E-Glass?

what exactly is E-Glass? the three “standard” glass fabrics are “E”, “S”, and “K”. E is a lower-cost fabric, yet it is in common use in the industry. E is also available in a “warp” bias (about 10c/yard more), which aids in stiffness, because there are more yarns (by weight) in the length direction. S fabric (usu about $3/yd more and E) is mainly used for sailboards, because of its added durability - it is also used in the production of “performance” surfboards. S provides improved impact resistance and toughness. there is also a version of S (.75c/yd more than plain weave) that is a flat weave. K glass (twice the cost of E, about $3/yd less than S) is also in use for sail and surf boards. it, like S, has improved tensile, flexural, and compressive strengths. it also known to wet-out faster and is ‘clearer’. when i was making productions boards, my “standard” was K, only using S when the customer requested it (and of course paid for it [smile]

I was wondering if using 7.5 oz. volan and 4 or 6 oz. E glass together [snip] BTW Ryan, why do you want to use volan? i mean, this stuff was really designed for marine and mold-making industries. are you looking for strength??? go with S glass. or how about going with kevlar (aramid fibers) and epoxy??

I did it all the time and it works just swell. No Problemo. I not too sure if Volan and “S” cloth is a good idea or not.

Am getting ready to start on a 9’6". In looking at Fiberglass Supply stock page they offer Plain Weave and Flat Weave 8oz. Volan cloth. Any comments on which to use, maybe one drapes easier or wets out better? If I decide I just got to do an opaque bottom color am I better off with “E” cloth or Volan? Thanks.
