Moon tails

Hey, the other day one of our shapers shaped a 6’ retro fish shape with a big moon tail. However I cant decide about the fin set-up. Twin fin? or quad? Anyone have any insight to which set-up would work better with the large moon tails. thanks.

i rode a twin that was really fun…can’t say about a quad…probably depends on the shape of the board, and how big the moon tail is (tighter and more pulled in, quad would go great…bigger and fatter, probably not so much).

A retro fish I would suggest the twins. I would use the quads on something a little more high performance. Could you do a dual setup for both? Not too retro though. I don’t think a moon tail itself is as important as the overall board design when selecting a fin setup.

…if you mean half moon tail or hook like I say

well, is similar to the swallow tail

all my personal boards since 1989 have this tail

I proved the tail with more tail area, less tail area, with a hip, with a baby hook tail, changed the pod thickness, and bigger crack, tiny crack

I changed the rear fin position far back and forward

I d used with Thruster, single fin+stabilizer-in- line, and now (about a year) with a Bonzer set up (check the photo archives 5´10´´bonzer)

Hey Phily:

I have found that it really depends on the overall configuration

of the board, eg. bottom flat/concave, rail shape & outline. The

size of the pins, depth of the cut, curve, etc. don’t seem to affect

the performance as much.

My favorite combo in a 6’ size is a speed-dialer quad which is loose

but holds well in steep and generates lots of speed off the rail.

The board in the attached pic is 6’2" with a 17" tail.
