when free lapping, before sanding the bottom to top laps…is it a good idea to brush some sanding resin along the lap line and the foam. or will it leave discoloration on the foam?

You can do that, sure.Just make sure to go lightly, and don’t make more work for yourself…it shouldn’t discolor the foam either.Herb

how do “pro-glassers” clean up the lap on the foam?

how do “pro-glassers” clean up the lap on the foam?>>>>>>>>>>>>When I lam up the bottom, I make sure to push enough resin out over the foam (without running the loose glass strains with it!)to give me a buffer zone.Make sure you keep it thin and flat.If there’s paint on your deck ,make sure not to drag your colors onto the other surfaces ,by keeping a consistantly, clean squeege edge.Herb

so, it is ok to go over a little onto the foam with the lam resein when laying up the bottom and it won’t effect the way the top lays (little high towards the rails due to to extra resein)? Was this once a problem and is that why people would use tape and cut the glass?

does anybody just try to lay the laps down as flat as possible and not sand at all? this is what i do and it seems to work well. I just flip the board over and cut off the loose strands after it gels. the only drawback is slightly more airbubbles to chase when you do the deck, but its easier than sanding.

Andy: The cutlaps are reserved for color lams and when using Volan (unbleached) cloth that wouldn’t look neat if left free lapped. The tip Herb mentions is very valid, the idea being that if you work your laps down nice and flat, with a small ammount of lam resin squeegeed out past the perimeter of the free lap line you will have a buffer area of protected foam IF you have to go back and clean up the lap line. I go so far as to use a pair of scissors on all the stray strands BEFORE I make the final lap. Angled air grinders, white grit sand paper and my favorite, a clean short surform blade can be used for cleaning up your lap. With the extra resin on the foam you’ll have a little extra protection from gouging the raw foam.
