Moving To Coos Bay, OR

Hey everyone, I’m new on here but have been using the site as a resource for the last three or four years. I currently live in Santa Barbara CA but will be moving to Coos Bay OR in July. I was wondering if there are any other shapers/glassers in that area as well as if there is any work in either one of those jobs. I am currently working for Haakensons fiberglass while shaping on the side and would really like to continue working at a similar job. Anything can help since I will know no one in the area. It would also be cool if any one wanted a new surfing buddy in Coos Bay. And lastly does anyone know how difficult it is to get blanks/glassing materials in this area? I found a shop up north but it looks like the shipping fee can be costly so something closer would be great. Thanks for you time and all you help.

hi cmel - keep me in mind when you get settled in. i’ll either be a small scale foam / fins distributor for the northwest soon, or have enough blanks on hand to help you out. my plan is to drive up coast and deliver periodically once i get enough customers. i’ll be handling pu blanks and wood fins at first, and my whole thing is to beat those shipping prices from the mail order houses. take care, bruce

ps - i’m looking to be up and running this winter

What companies are you hoping to carry in both the blanks and fins? It looks like you’ll be offering exactly what I’m looking for. Hopefully by the time your up and running I’ll have enough customers to make your trip worth while. Keep in touch.

Still in talks with three different foam companies but have fin folks on line. We’re still in the early phases here, negotiating lease on new space as we speak. I’ll keep you informed as we go through the process …

Hey B. If you are considering eps blanks, you may want to contact Rob Russo, at Russo surfboards in Lincoln City, I know he has complained to me about the cost so shipping on blacks.

Here’s the update that I promised - we are in the “hold” mode, like so many other things right now. Until we can afford a container of foam we’re going to continue to make our own boards and fins, and hold off on distribution. We plan on buying foam through Pau Hana, who delivers to any Fastenal Supply outlets. Fastenal has stores nationwide. They have great rates for all of us small time builders, we urge you to check them out. Check out the Pau Hana site for supplies, then go to the Fastenal site to find an outlet near you. Blair will have a distributor in Santa Cruz soon, check them out. I don’t work for Pau Hana, but after a lot of shopping, I find that they’re the best for builders like us (builders in out of the way places). We will distribute foam and fins in the future, stay tuned …
