I think Derek had a pretty ugly separation , so was not real stoked at the time…[have you seen the ‘litmus’ magazine , where the woman writes about him ? ]
…no wonder he just surfs …
ben
so, what did she write?
where does he get all his money to have a house on the point?
what is that sort of teepee that Wayne Lynch is in?
the movie is just so damn good, every part so unique.
wayne lynch, a stylemaster, in those sick blue tubes
derek hynd, another stylemaster, boggling supertubes
slater in the intro
and joel fitzgerald in Ireland… just turns around and goes! some of those barrels are so deep… and how cold must it’ve been?
curren… good god…strumming out his own riffs, surfing those beachbreaks and once again the STYLE
the video reeks of effortless, stylish, natural born talent.
I began researching & talking to shapers about a year ago, with regards to getting myself some education of fish (since getting my first, I’ve never looked back - & probably never will!).
Anyway, after speaking to Jed at Bushrat Surfboards, Jed contacted me to say he & Derek had been talking about my (dumb, no doubt) questions.
Derek asked me to mail him.
I got a very lengthy and passionate viewpoint on fish back from Derek. Giving me his purist & soulful approach to the shape, as well as realting to what he knew about me & the area I surfed.
Of all the shapers I contacted during this period, Derek was the most informative and involved of the replies - and HE chased me (some kook!) for the conversation!
(for some shapers it was like getting blood from a stone - didn’t they want my money - had they lost their stoke??)
Hats off; I will always have full appreciation & respect for Derek for that.
(Chip, I haven’t forgotten ya with those rocker lengths & pics… I’ve just been slack, that’s all)
Now i’ve even seen the Extras on Litmus, and i’ve changed my mind - the best ride goes to Gonad Man on the wave he surfed into Gilligan’s Island on - style, power, grace, aggressive - he got it all.
Consafos: I can’t get ‘Hano Hano Hawaii’ out a my head man!
I know that litmus changed a lot of peoples lives. I bought the movie from an add in tracks and we were sitting down having a cleansing ale and watching it . Tom Curren came on riding a single fin and the next thing I know I’m on the phone ordering one . Good Movie.
i bought Litmus about little over a year ago, together with Sprout- and to tell you the truth, i was more captivated by Sprout
Me too. Litmus has kind of a dark, weird feel to it. Sprout is just seems like ‘good times’ in comparision. However some of hynds surfing in Litmus should not be possible and blow my mind.
Can’t help but think that it looks like an thin egg rail which got me thinking about this http://www.tomwegenersurfboards.com/rails.htm Quote: “The Egg Rail: … It actually acts as a suction rail in small waves and a release rail when the board speeds up.” I wonder if there is consent on this theory or if it just the joker. It sounds like an excellent compromise and something that would suit intermediate surfers (like me).
If you play the segment in slow motion at the same time as Pink Floyd’s dark side of the moon there is a hidden message… Something or other about twin fins and quads being some marketing ploy to appeal to the fat old guys who cant float on a thruster or something. Check it out. It’s mind blowing.

When I saw that Derek Hynd’s section in Litmus I thought (and still think) I wanted to surf just like that, it inspires me much more than the punk surfing we can see elsewhere even though they are doing amazing things too. Hynd’s surf is so clean and aesthetic.
"… Something or other about twin fins and quads being some marketing ploy to appeal to the fat old guys who cant float on a thruster or something. "
yeah , old fat guys like dan malloy , joel tudor , tom curren , dave rastovich , and derek hynd [you might think he’s old , if you are 18 but he’s not fat , by the way]
ah yes, "poopiekook’ , indeed eh? Aren’t you closely aligned with that other famous pos[t]er , poppycock?
Thanks a lot for the photos Salth! Funny to see this thread resurrected after more than a year. I still get blown away every time I watch Litmus, I really owe a lot to Kidman and his crew.
Look at that list… you practically just made a commercial right there. You dont see fat chicks in beer commercials do you?
If you have got to talk about antiquated boards you might as well talk about the friggin design instead of listing a bunch of names and giving text descriptions of “amazing” video sequenses. Whats everyone’s opinion on where the most flex should be in a traditionally outlined twin or a quad? What rocker modifications would accompany that?
