poor lad.

depraved on accounta you been deprived.

deprived of information…that is…

stop by the house when you are in town

this winter I’ll give ya a primerand perhaps a go out

precious water time

every moment not on the mat

makes you pine all the more

for mat time.

…ambrose…

too much everything else

when is the wind gonna turn?

Sounds like a deal Ambrose.

I was just reading about the mats, and in my ignorance must ask but how do mats differ from bodyboards (other than the obvious)?

FreshW, the obvious ie low inflation soft air bag is oh so subtle in reality. Much much more glide, carry speed through the flats and string unmakable junk sections into a super fun, super long ride. Constantly variable rocker and concave/convex bottoms at your fingertips. Once you get past rankest beginner level it becomes ongoing challenge to read the wave and shape what you are riding as you go. Can be very deliberate or totally spontaneous. Much more ergonomic riding position than body board or paipo (long live the happy lumbar spine). Otters seem to really like me when I 'm out on mat; more so than on other equipment. Maybe its the no hard surfaces or edges or points. Kinda like them (except of course the teeth).

Often people don’t even know you are out surfing with them. Float on the shoulder a bit and then slowly drift into position and while they are thinking you are just some dweeb on an observation tour you snag the wave of the set. Oops, then they know…

Almost forgot the variable rail shape from fat and round for holding power to bladed out foil for speed planning…

Hey Dale,

Good to see you still posting away on here. I’m always stoked to see what you’ve got to share (especially all the great photos)! The photos from muscia are outstanding.

Andrew and Jason and I (from the old Carp house) had the mats out for a wobbly high tide session at Rincon a couple of weeks back. We had a blast. It’s probably been the first matt session in a while for any of us but I know it got me energized to start pulling it out of the quiver again more regularly.

I saw another fella swim out with his on Tuesday inside the cove but I didn’t have a chance go scoot over and say hello. Kenny H shows up every now and then, maybe it was him; it was too far away to tell.

A couple of weeks ago, I saw another guy on a matt score one of the rare decent set waves up at the indicator and scream all the way through to the rivermouth going mach 10! It looked like so much fun; it made me want to leave the board on the beach, run in and grab a matt myself!

The matt sightings have been rare around here still, but it’s always enjoyable to watch when somebody shows up with their trashbag and nabs a good one!

cheers,

Nick

mat riding is the haiku of surfing…no, really…

Dale always puts out the good.

How you doing??

while on our trip to oz i bought a cheap mat at a local shop just to ride in beachbreak out front.(surf was very small) anyway, the girlfriend gave it a go and was stoked! said it reminded her of when she was young, surfing on those old canvas mats we had back then.she brought one back with her and yesterday we hit some fun surf on our mats! now i gotta get her a good one for sure…

oh an how they love to bump ya while riding the wave with ya!

Me woife loves her mat and says

"Nobody I Mean Nobody

Touches my mat!"

…and that’s good.

…ambrose…

she comes nack from the beach with a smile on her face that

reachs all the way out to the perimeter of her aura.

Beautiful artistry, absolutely amazing to watch and listen to.

Can hardly wait to see the film…
