'Muzza's 6'er

After many months of 'p.m's , phone calls , a couple of catch ups face to face , today we got the chance to get together at his place , and for me to check out his boards yeehaa !! Always a pleasure meeting other swaylockians and seeing their setups.

So, thanks very much , Muzza , for the opportunity to visit !

When I first laid eyes on THIS ...

...my first thought was,

" yeeehaaaw !!! wide-tailed single fin stubby !!" [ which has been a DEFINATE favourite of mine , for a LONG time !!]

muzza was thinking 'quad setup'

So, this has the potential to be a multi-fin setup board , right from the get-go !

My "Prawn" board [R.I.P. ]  started out in life as a single fin , then slowly evolved [?"devolved"?] into a multi-plugged , tail-heavy , rail- delammed wreck , which was put out to pasture [ read: 'council pickup day'] , a year or so ago , now ...

By the way .... 'Balsa' , you played a part in the decision process of this board !

while we were standing there discussing possible 'clear' vs swirl vs colour board[s] , into my head popped " well, this is pretty flat-bottomed , could be a fast board , and as Balsa says , "red goes faster !"

so , based on that ..er..." logic" , the die was cast , as they say [whoever "THEY" may be?!]

Since one of our biggest fears was ending up with a pink board , and remembering the wise words someone had said here [maybe on windy's 'pink board' thread from memory?] we aimed to have the red pigment in the jug look almost 'too dark' . We remembered someone commenting that when it is spread thin , especially on WHITE foam , it will always look lighter , than it did in the jug !

To that end , we used the entire contents of the [?three quarter full?] jar on the bottom , alone ...

here is the colour it produced [ it was mixed with a VERY small amount of burgundy pigment , also] ... set against white for a comparison ...

I figured , " err on the side of it being "too red" , rather than 'not red enough' . Fire engine red , or blood red " , that was probably about the colour I had in mind ...

So, having used up ALL the pigment , and a LOT of the resin , it will now be about a week or more until we can get to doing the deck . This will give time to touch up and smooth out a few areas , before tackling the next stage .

  ..... I'm EXCITED !!

[ I haven't worked on a board for a year and a half nearly , when the 'orange stub' was completed ....]

Yep , I likes me little single fins , alright !   And I like how the tail in this one is wider than the orange stub , and the board seems THINNER overall, too, so ...it will be nice to ride a LIGHTER , wide little singley for a change ...

Scott , if this board DOES  turn out to be too small for you to easily paddle [?] , maybe the 6'4 half-done blank on my racks has your name on it , eh , what do you RECKON ?? And of course , you can have the pick of WHATEVER fins you like !!

Well,  I'm DEFINATELY keen to get some photos , and footage , of us both riding this red rocket !

It sure should be HEAPS of fun , I reckon !!

      cheers !

Hi Chip, nice going! I'm glad you showed the close ups of the lam. This should be the prototype of all wet outs for the less experienced. Guys who have laminating questions need to be referred to these photos. This is what we're shooting for. Great job, Thanks!

ps. Still "dawning" with you, I enjoy the go outs.

thanks for your kind words ,  Mr. T  !

Muzza did the wet out .

We DID make some mistakes , TRUST me ...

the main ones ?

catalyst quantity ...

temperature of work area

not having two of us doing the lamming

me not wearing a respirator ( so now I have  a really 'nice' [ not ! ] headache today , as a result !  ....that will TEACH me ! )

....lessons learnt , though , so that , hopefully,  when we do the deck , it will be better ?!

" This should be the prototype of all wet outs for the less experienced "

well, again , kind words , thanks ....

but , the truth is ....

Murray and I have only ever done a total of around ? 29 boards between us !! [I think he has done twelve in a relatively short space of time , [a coupla years?]

......whereas I have done a 'grand' total of 17 .....over the last 25 years ?! [my first strip and reshape job was in 1986] .

  So  .....

I would consider myself , at least , very inexperienced ! And not that proficient at all ! ,  when it comes to laminating  boards. I love doing it , don't get me wrong , I just don't get the opportunity that often , having mostly lived in blocks of flats [ that's 'small sized apartments' , for the americans] , for a large percentage of the last 32 years.

I am actually VERY inexperienced at laminating pigmented resin ( well, on boards , at least ) , T !   I suppose that , with the fin panels I have done , I am  not a TOTAL stranger to colour work , though ,  eh ?!

THIS was the FIRST one colour pigment job I have attempted on a surfboard , and as I say , Scott ['Muzza'] did the lamming work . It was HIS first pigment job , too, apparently !  So , he did WELL , I  reckon ...four thumbs up !  A commercial window cleaner by trade , he certainly has the squeegee action down pat !!  (We just needed to be able to take more time doing it , is all. )

The photos I will post on the "show us your resin swirls etc" thread soon , are of a board by "P-Co'', which was done by him and his employee , Matt. ['P-Co' = Ross , from 'Longboards Scarborough' , which is my local good surfboard shop]

He and Matt lamming it together was a wise decision .... when you have 8' of rails and deck and bottom to lam , and are attempting.... well...I'll let those interested check it out !! ....

  cheers !

   Ben

Onya Ben. Thanks for the tips about pigment and resin proportions !

you're welcome Brett !

the other thing that dawned on me , as I pm'ed good ol' [young] helpful  'Kokua' was ...

the CONTAINER for the pigment ...oops ! ....narrow , and deep ??? [why?]  ...there IS a reason for using wider , less deep ice cream containers , as I now remember !!

and the amount of time it stayed in there ....[ " ummm..... it's getting  warm in there , Scott ! "]  "d'ohhhh  !!!"

I now remember [and it makes sense , thinking about it now ! ...."50/50 hindsight"  , always ! hahaha ] ] reading in the past here ...

" get the stuff OUT of there , and onto the board QUICKLY " .....

  oops !

now we know WHY ....

...any update please , muzza ?

[it's been a few weeks now ...

  cheers
