My backyard shaping bay

The makeshift bay is 9 1/2 foot long by 2 1/2 meters wide.  I have nailded tarps to the roof trusses to hang to the floor to keep the dust in, also to keep the wind and dust out.  I have layed thick plastic on the floor and one side of the makeshift bay to also keep the dust in so the missus car dont get dirty.   At the bottom of the tarps I have screwed them into wood to weigh it down.  In one photo you will see a 8 foot long bit of wood with a thin shelf on it.  On the floor of the bay there are two 4 foot lights and a double four foot light to go on the roof.

I bought a huge bit of wood to use as feet for the lights, have to cut it in half then I have poles to use as light stands.  Ive got u clamps to place the lights on, it will allow me to adjust the hieght of the lights so I get the shadow right.  I will only have on light stand and will just flip the board over when needed.

I also have another room under the house that is bessa brick, I keep my compressor, tools, glass and resign in there, The compressor has a 10 meter hose which needs to be attached better to the roof to keep the hose out of the road.  The lights need to have leads attached which wont take me long and I need better power sockets to keep myself safe.  I should be ready to start by end of the week.

Im thinking of tarping up another small room for glassing to keep it seperate and more chance to keep it clean and tidy, but thats down the track.

Hope you enjoy the photos.

more photos.  The last photo gives a better idea of the space and where it started from

notice the classy way ive joined the tarps together, my missus clothes pegs, haaa, ha.  I got the lights from salvation army shop for 3 bucks, the wood and poles from the tip, old tarps that I use to use when camping, bought one of them from bunnings.  I also needeed to by the plastic, bolts, and u clamps from bunnings.  I love getting things from the salvos and the tip, find all sorts of stuff there.........   Have a good week all.

thanks mate, Im real proud of it, Its been a dream of mine to have my own little space with walls a good lighting ever since I started dreaming of doing this stuff, and now to see it nearly there is a stoke I cant explain.  ive got a few boards planned but Im so anal I just have to get the room right first, then clean so I dont trip on nothing, then I will work every night to finish my project by the 20th this month, so I can drop in on a friend and his missus.

Hi Di99er, you might want to consider a little more length in the bay. If you want to do a longboard, you will need it. Other than that...Cheers. Happy Shaping!

Put something down on the floor that will be "non slip".  Maybe old carpet with one of those non slip pads under it.   Or some kind of rubber mat.  Foam dust and heavy mill plastic will result in a slip on your a$$.  Otherwise;  It'll work.  Very creative.  I like the clothespins.

Looks like a fricking death trap.

Damn you Resinhead…when I read that comment I had just taken a huge gulp of sweet iced tea and blew it all over my new laptop…

haaaaaaa ha, yup, not done yet resin head, just the basics, will be adding better power points for safety, of course nothing will be on the floor when done, all wires will be running along the roof on hooks, slip mate is a great idea along both sides of the stands, wont really be doing long mals so should be right there, mainly short boards.  Should only take 1 or 2 nights to get it set probably, if I started work on boards right now then yup, she is a death trap indeed.

Good to hear from you Mr. Clean!  My bad.

on talking to a few people will remove the plastic on the floor and just sweep the concrete when done shaping, if I use the room for glassing will come up with something else for floor covering so I dont stuff u[p the garage floor

I just grab some big cardboard boxes from Bunnings before I start glassing, and just open them out and lay them down over the concrete. I leave them down for sanding, hotcoating and glossing, and when I’m done, just chuck them in the bin, leaving my nice pristine concrete. The only downside with this method is that years back when toilet training the dog, I initially taught it to go on a piece of cardboard to get it used to going in the same spot. It still thinks the same applies with my glassing cardboard…or perhaps it just really dislikes my boards!
